There are so many things against an AWD sedan that its not even worth going on to be honest. You will sell a handful each month, and you will never get your cash back.

Agreed on the second point, leave it to the experts like Audi/Subaru. Ford should just concentrate on getting the basics right, which they still can't seem to master. |

Three Points:
1) There already is an AWD Falcon it's called the Territory. 2)Subaru sells AWD because it's identified as a manufacturer that makes AWD cars with flat configuration engines just like the Falcon is identified as Saloon, RWD, inline six standard with V8 option. 3) The only other reason other cars have AWD is because they a FWD and need more grip because they are putting out too much power for FWD to handle (Mazda 6 MPS) I hope to God Ford doesn't make an AWD Falcon because it will confuse people, it will cost a fortune and it will be a flop just like it was with Holden |

BMW actually make several AWD cars.
You can even get a AWD 3 series. For the snow. I would concider a AWD falcon. What I really want is a 2 wheel drive falcon. You know with some sort of LSD. But they are so rare. |

No way will there be an AWD sedan falcon.
Ford aus already has a falcon based car in AWD, it's called the territory. Over half of the US is covered in snow and ice for over three months of the year every year; that is why AWD is desirable in that market. Furthermore, the size of the US and Canadian markets not to mention the volume of cars sold in these countries can substantiate a business case for them. One of the reasons why SUV's are so popular in the states is for the real cold climates where some people couldn't be stuffed shovelling snow, and some want a little extra traction. The fact that ford has finally worked out how to make a sedan without a massive transfer case facilitates the supply of what the north american market has always wanted, but were restricted from having. Does the dwindling sales of the SUV's in america sound familiar? Ford are replacing one of the major reasons for an SUV and putting it into cars that cost a lot less to run. Ford USA can make sales here. We don't have the same environment here. We couldn't possibly move the numbers which would allow us to invest such tremendous amounts of money and recoup the costs, especially when vehicles like territory and captiva and all the other cheap alternatives from kia etc are able to undercut the market to the extent that ford would struggle to sell double figures. I will eat my words if I'm wrong, and I would also take all the members here on a joyflight doing orbits around centrepoint tower in a 747 if I'm wrong.

To prove that AWD doesn't own all, have a look in the territory section. IIRC, the 2WD terry kicked butt and so did the Falcon XT.

It doesn't prove squat I'll stick to my AWD, as I have proved and still prove every time it rains, snows or gets icey it is better than RWD in these adverse driving conditions. _ |

But....Better? How? If you drive at the legal limit or to what the condition force you to then you should have no problems, AWD or not. Where do you live? Snow is a pretty rare sight in most of Australia (as we are talking about an Aussie made car for an Aussie market), unless you venture up to the "Alps" every now and then.

These conditions I speak of aren't extreme, they are normal winter conditions I encounter (Sth Is, NZ). Speed limits & driving to the conditions don't come into it if you cant even make it up an ice covered hill road. Believe me I've owned both & know what is superior, but this is so off topic it's not funny. AWD Falcon, IMO won't happen, but if it did I'd be very tempted by AWD F6 |

And yes if you try hard enough, you can hang the **** out of an AWD if it's 'boring" for you but under normal driving conditions with respect to a RWD it won't step out on you as easily. 1st or 2nd gear full boost does the trick though and I wouldn't call that safe nor normal either : Mums VT slides like a bastard in the rain, not even trying. |

As far as off road goes AWD provides accesibility to restricted areas. For performance applications as an example id say an AWD Falcon sized vehicle would need 20-30KW of extra power just to maintain the same RWD 1/4 and acceleration performance just to overcome the extra weight penelty of the driveline and extra driveline parasitic power losses due to extra moving parts and frictional resistance.

My current vehicle is AWD (realtime i.e activates rears when nessasary) and i have owned it since i bought it new in 2000. I have yet to find a car that i am happy with that has the same level of control as my current ride. And believe me, i have wanted to update for ages. Most people wont appreciate AWD untill they drive one for at least a year and become familliar with its ability in all weather conditions. Mine is a manual, and i love the fact that on wet and poor roads i can floor it, dump the clutch and the car takes off without so much as a slight chirp of the tyres. Try that in RWD or FWD. I do heaps of driving in many different conditions, but the one constant is the crap roads at all speeds. AWD fairmont gear mmmmmmmmm, AWD XR6 Turbo yummy. :

The only AWD I own is a 4WD and that sits in the Car Hole LOL for weeks on end, till I go bush, take the bike out and need to tow the trailer over ruff surfaces or need to pick up stuff that requires more room the rest of the time I drive my Turbo.
I would never even consider a AWD Falcon in Australia no point, Cross overs are average at best and simply don’t even get close to going the places I want to go. |
