The Crown Vic was over 18 feet long, whereas most Falcons have been around 16 feet long. Taurus is somewhere in the middle if I remember rightly, which puts it into Fairlane territory.

It's not length that should matter though? It's interior space.

So in terms of interior volume, how do all three compare then? As well as head room / leg room.

The boot space would be interesting to compare too.

Internally, Falcon and Crown Vic have almost identical hip, shoulder and rear leg room.
D3 Taurus has similar shoulder room to Mondeo but other internal dimensions are similar to Falcon.
Taurus / Crown Vic uses thick doors that add considerably to its width, 125mm more than Falcon.

Current Taurus's main failing is that it's based on an SUV platform and that gives a tall stance
due to the high hip point in the seating, all adding up to a much heavier vehicle than it should be.
Best way to describe it is to imagine if Ford AUS based the Falcon sedan on Territorys floor pan, seats and doors...
Word is next generation Taurus will be based on an extended version of Fusion/Mondeo
the twins will have a shorter wheelbase, similar to current Fusion to allow the stretch to Taurus.

Full sized American vehicles tend to be huge with smaller interior room compared to our local cars
while our Large cars are more like over sized wider versions of Mid Sized vehicles, strange that...

Part of the reason why Crown Victoria died such a hideous death was because
it became a fleet queen and because it's fan base refused every attempt to
change the Crown Vic from what it was, a body On Frame traditional large Car.

There is a lesson in this for Ford Australia, never stop listening to your buyers
and never stop improving and updating your car, the day you do is that day it dies..

Many thanks, jpd80.

I've seen Crown Vics in Australia (used for film work). Would love one in the garage though, with "bad boys" playing on the radio

The thing that I admired about the good ol' Crown Vic is how it remained in production with styling unchanged for such a long time - a total of 13 years since its last facelift. Although it knew it was coming, I find it a shame to think after such a long time of being the face of the streets of NYC, it has finally ceased production

That and COPS. I loved the mid-1990s Chevrolet Caprice cop car too.

NY streets will look weird now with those supposed Nissan van replacements, but I've seen Camry taxis in use there too.

Don't really like it. Imagine if all the Falcon taxis here were replaced by those.

A bit like a modern day London cab.

With the last Crown now build, in a few months time we should really start to get a feel of which model the cops will use next & weather Holdens export plan has worked.. Very interesting times ahead!!

Here are some of the exported Caprice's sitting in a dealer car park.
They're not wanted by the departments. One big issue is the lack of column shift auto.
GM also has a clause in the contract stating these cars cannot be sold to civilians; they're to be used only for government use.

The Charger looks to be the one that will replace the Crown Vic.

Thanks for that, Russ.

If Ford could export the FG with or without the turbo engine and column shift (in form of a push button on dash?) - surely they'd be onto a winner?

I'm sure most of the cops enjoyed the Crown Vic and Chevy Caprice models compared to Impalas and some other front-wheel-drive offerings some departments have to use now. The new Falcon would look great on the beat there.

The ute still has a column shift available for the ZF, but there's no way Detroit will want to lose Taurus interceptor sales to FoA.

Not made here syndrome exists alive and well over there.

My prediction: the same thing that happened to the Caprice will happen to the Crown Vic.
Fourth paragraph of here:

This vehicle established such strong devotion by many police departments that a cottage industry thrived in refurbishing Caprices for continued police service after GM discontinued production of the car.
