I don't know if Rick James sued or whatnot, but Queen and David Bowie had a go at Vanilla Ice.

You know, I have always wondered about My Sharona - the original. Has anyone really listened to the lyrics? "I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind"????

All their songs rip off something.. I hate em so much.

It was funny with living end at fed square when rogue traders got boo'd off stage though!

Yeah that was a Queen song off 'Sheer Heart Attack' (the best album by Queen IMHO)

Quote from CNN site;
Despite his meteoric rise and recording success, James won only a single Grammy, for co-writing M.C. Hammer's monster hit "U Can't Touch This," a song sampled from James' "Super Freak."

So no rip-off there and even though I hate the song, you can't deny the impact that song had over a generation. Album sales of 10 million. Probably one of the most popular rap songs of all time.

Same with Vanilla Ice, whom I detest, he helped pave the way (along with the vastly superior Beasty Boys) for white rappers in the mainstream, so deserves his duibous place in musical history.

So all you rap haters, now you know who to blame.

Artists who have their songs covered by a current artist, are generally WRAPPED to have their songs heard again, not to mention the extra royalties they receive. It is when they are un-credited that it gets ugly. These days the rights to use the samples are obtained before release. Quite often the sampled artists career is re-vitalised. Aerosmith and Run-DMC are a classic example. People hear the song and then want to find out about the original artist.

Okay, then there's 'Bittersweet Symphony' by The Verve which ripped off a Orchestral version of a Stone's song. They had received permission to use the sample, but when it was a hit. The Stones sued them, saying they used too much. They had to hand over 100% the royalities for the song. The song won a Grammy, but it was awarded to Jagger and Richards. Talk about bittersweet. Great song IMHO

Another you may not be aware of is Coldplay's 'Talk', which uses (with permission) the melody from the Kraftwerk song,'Computer Love'.

My Sharona is about getting off on younger girls.

Almost as weird as that Police song. Every step you take, every move you make, I'll be watching you?

If you compare Rogue Traders' lyrics with The Knacks' lyrics you will find they only have two sentences conatining three words each which is "Never never stop" & "Give it up". So those that think they have covered "My Sharona" get over it.

Does that mean that any other song that has any word such as 'love, baby, home' and any other in the english language is a cover??

Really it is only the riff they have re-recorded as stated in their front cover of the album.

My Sharona

Oo my little pretty one, pretty one
When you gonna give me some time, Sharona?
Oo you make my motor run, my motor run
Gun it coming off of the line, Sharona

Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up with a touch of the younger kind
My-ee ey-ee by-ee ahee ah woo!
Ma ma ma my Sharona

Come a little closer, over here
Close enough to look in my eyes, Sharona
Keep a little mystery, kissin' me
Runnin' down the length of my thigh, Sharona

Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up from a touch of the younger kind
My-ee ey-ee by-ee ahee ah woo!
Ma ma ma my Sharona
Ma ma ma my Sharona

When ya gonna get to me, get to me
Is it just a matter of time, Sharona
Is it a destiny, a destiny
Or is it just a game in my mind, Sharona

Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up from a touch of the younger kind
My-ee ey-ee by-ee ahee ah woo!
Ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma
Myee ey-ee by-ee ahee ah woo!

Ma ma ma my Sharona

Ooooh my Sharona

I really don't think anyone was suggesting the Rogues were covering My Sharona, just that it sounds very similar in the music area and has some of the same lyrics in the middle.

Interesting that they have given credit on the album cover and that is a credit to them...

I think you will find that the rogue traders will be paying royalties to the song writer or the record company if the writer is dead to use the riff and the words other wise they would get sued. Even if it is only two sentences and the guitar riff . I do believe that people have been sued before for haveing 5 notes that sound similar to someone elses song.
