Why? Take my own personal case: I needed to buy a second car so I could go away to Rockhampton to do my train driver training while the missus was left with the "good car". I gave myself a $7000 budget. I could have bought a reasonably recent second hand Kia or Hyundai hatchback,but decided to deliberately look for something old, with a few requirements: two door, rear wheel drive, air con, five speed manual, fun to drive.

$5000, amazing handling, gets heaps of looks, has factory air con, parts are easy to get...
For cruising you don't need bulk horsepower, and if the handling is sweet enough, you also don't need masses of horsepower to have fun.

Why would you get a bland Kia or Hyundai just like a hundred thousand others on the road...?

I used to work on old geminis and the like, those old things are bulletproof. You might not be the quickest on the road but you certainly felt like it! Belting along the highway in 4th doing 80kph you really had to drive the thing, it had rattles and creaks but felt solid as. I'm glad I messed around with them and other old cars (rwd Mazda 626, corollas, geminis, etc). They where so much fun. Nowadays the drift crowd have cottoned on and they are becoming harder to find.

Most of the foreign 4s of the era had more power and far more advancement than our aussie 6s ....
Sad isnt it
4 cylinders, 2 barrell carbs, headers,clutch fans, decent radiator shrouds
that stuff was only on the upper class aussie cars ...
250 crossies, holden red, wee wee little single barrell carbs, what a joke really
Oh did i mention overhead camshafts and rev their rings out ....

My younger brother had a corona with a 2 L (18 RG) engine
For a 4 potter it would shake down any bog stock 5L comoodore
Even has time slips to prove that

old 4 cyl are cool..

Ive got an old 1969 cortina for a cruiser & its great. There cheap to buy & insure. Parts are cheap & not that hard to find if you know where to look.

Sure it doesnt have 600+ killerwasps but they still motor along alright (especially with a few mods) & it turns more heads that a brand new FPV.

The only downside is girls love them & think there cute (if that is a downside, lol), & the old guys that trap you when your filling up & chew your ear off.

Holden Gemini's were popular in my town for a while.
As for me i have a Datsn 200B in progress, because i used to have a 200B wagon when i was 16 that my brother gave away. So i got another lol.

This is my daily, cheap, easy, baron, cops a beating. The body is rubbish, but it means that i dont have to worry about parking under a tree in winter or the shopping trolley dings in the carpark.
I'm itching to get back into a falcon but when i do, i'll be hanging onto this.

Please do...those things can be awesome and you can't kill them with a big stick. Stick four Watanbe style wheels on it (I notice one on the back there already) and you have a cool car.

These were the first of the 100 KW factory jobies wernt they ???
They punted them against the eras ET Turbo (pulsar) and the EXA Turbo and the corollas rather embarresed the turbo lads and the corollas wernt even turboed
For a late 80s era car , there wasnt much north of a factory V8 that would come near them corollas, very nimble and quick

These guys are learning about debt..
I wander if the GFC has anything to do with it..
Besides IMO an older car with some late model parts
makes them very stealth..
Parts that fit like 98 Corona front suspension including cross-member, steering column fits in 88 RA28 Celica with rack and pinion, bigger brakes etc..
Similar with diff with late model disc brakes..
It's not always about drifting either...

Im 16, nearly 17 and lookng at buying a Mk1 or mk2 2 door escort.
Just have to find one and offload my XG ute.

Reason being i love older cars, dad used to race them, i get to pit crew them (mainly comprises of putting sponsor stickers on and wax and grease remover :p )
but also if you go with the trend of buying a nissan skyline, I think its pretty hard to find one these days that hasnt had 12 owners and has a pepsi can exhaust system, THey will be worth nothing in a few years.

Heaps of them up here in Brisbane, was hard to find a corolla or datsun under $5000 at one stage, even for an absolute heap!

Given the opportunity i would have a garage full of 70's and 80's cars. my only stumbling block is the Mrs. She wont drive anything oldish.

I have a 03BAxr and a 06terri but also and old falcon and cortina. I wiould rather drive the old girls anydays - easy to fix if they *** themselves.

Dont agree that parts are hard to get. They seem to be easier to get for the tina now than when i did it up 20years ago.

Not really sure why people bag current 4 cylinders but love the 70s equivalents. A Corolla aint cool now so why is one from 30 years ago?

Fair enough if the car is a bit sporty like an old turbo or Escort but I dont get everything else.

I've been seeing a whole lot of riced up Corollas of this model getting around recently. They disappeared for awhile, now I'm seeing them return in the hands of hoons.

For the same reason base model Falcons from the 70s are cool now. A bit of retro fun.

BTW, Corollas from the 70s had plenty of performance options. They just never hit the market here. You could buy a little KE 30 corolla with a 2TGE twin cam in Japan. They were plenty quick and those twin 40mm sidedrafts they came with sounded nice.

treated with respect those old small medium 70`s rwd cars are the ultimate cheap motoring i reckon, no power steering/air conditioning, no constant velocity joints to worry about, the least amount of accessories to bugger up or need attention, put an electronic ignition module on them , very cheap motoring.

yeah you're spot on mik. about the only thing that kept me busy with the corolla was the old crappy points ignition

There's heaps of old school jap cars getting around down here at the moment, Mazda's, toyotas, datsuns, hell even i have a KE77 corolla ready to fix up lol

This was my last old schooler, stock 1lt, drums all round and leaf springs front and rear. It actually went ok. I repainted it white with a blue pearl then sold it a few months later. wish I never did. Just like all my dattos ive had!!

I had a datto 180B for a few months when I first moved to brisbane.

I loved that I could start it with a screwdriver, never lock it, rev the guts out of it, flat change whenever I wanted, and strangely enough..... never go fast enough to break the law.

It was a great time in my life, and I would add the best $400 ive spent towards motoring.

It met an untimely end to it roadworthy status with an angle grinder, and is now doing duties in tamworth carting hay around a paddock. Im certain it still has the same engine oil in it as it did 6 years ago.

While I understand power is handy to have, its not everything...

I remember dads old Datson 120y, absolutely gutless wonder but god it was fun to drive!

As strange as it sounds my Mrs Hyundai excel is fun to drive, sometimes more so than the f6. With the f6 foot flat to the floor a nd you're at way over the legal speed limit in a gnats fart. The excel makes you WORK for it

I bought a 200B for $300 came with 10 months rego, good little thing, oh maybe 10 years ago
Never locked it, left the keys in it and the stooopid kid next door thought his mighty 202 HZ kingswood was faster
Big mistake
The little 2 L absolutely flogged him and all his mates saw it , even better
Was a one owner , drove it till the rego ran out,never lifted the bonnet thats reliability for you, young fella bought it, on way home he wrote it of
