Most of the money made by the musicians themselves is from concert tours and unless you have songwriting credits you get bugger all from recording

WinMX was awesome back in about 2001 until that went bye bye.

Been using Frostwire to get the odd hard to find MP3, but I mainly buy my cd's ;)

I havn't used Limewire since I started buying CDs when I got a job, however it was a good way to 'try out' a band. I'd download a couple, if I liked them download another couple, then if I liked them I'd go out and invest in the band by buying one of their Albums, if thats good, some more albums. If there all good, I'll see them live and buy merch.
This has happened for quite a few bands i like, spending $100's on a band started from one downloaded song.

I actually had to do an assignment on this for Uni not long ago (some may have seen me complaining about it).

To give you all a better idea, the link below contains a full breakdown on who gets the majority share, the estimated impact music piracy and film piracy has on the industry etc: http://www.clickitticket.com/MoneyMusicandPiracy.asp

The number 1 downloaded song just depresses me for some reason

Demonoid? or P2P in general?

P2P
People in various ways hack or manipulate software and load it as a .torrent file to the server. The app/music/video they are seeding stays on their machine, only the information file (.torrent) is upped to a server. You download said .torrent file in to a torrent program such as uTorrent which then downloads portions of said software from the various seeds and peers machines until you have 100% of it. Seeds being those that have downloaded 100% of the app, Peers being those still in the process, obviously in the beginning there is only one seed, eventually peers become seeds. You keep seeding once completed until your ratio on that torrent reaches at least 1 to maintain your share ratio, dl/ul. The ideal situation is when you try to keep you ratio above 1. You can seed multiple apps youve downloaded, thus if one isnt beeing dl'ed by others and the ratio stays below 1, the shortfall can be made up by other apps youre seeding by going well over a ratio of 1 on those other torrents. Obviosly you need to leave your machine on, your internet connection open, and the torrent program running, to both download, and seed.

Demonoid is good, but be aware there are many virus/trojans and other problems, as with any P2P, but being a moderated site, if you stick to fairly well seeded and dl'ed torrents, you should be fine. Always scan them once dl'ed, and open them first off in "sandboxie". However well seeded torrents make it harder to reseed.

Be aware of false positives too. Antivirus gear look for portions of code that are known virus code, but are sometimes also good code, and many keygens give off red flags. Keygens being the method some use to get full access to hacked apps. Without the keygen, the app wont run.

Torrenting is similar to P2p in many ways. The only real difference here is that you use a different client... Which is still similar in many ways.

The main difference is that you search for the Files on a website (Torrent site). You can simply search for the file name, genere, type and depending on the query will show the results...

D/click on the desired file, this opens the torrent which will show the name, description, codec, size etc.

Click on "Click here to download the torrent" and a new client window will appear asking you to select either "Open, save or Cancel". Select open and a window will appear showing all files in the download. Untick unwanted files (Samples) etc... Then click ok.......

Wallaahhh. You have just succesfully started your first torrent download...

Frostwire has the capability to do torrents as well.

Personally I use a program called "Vuze" and either Isohunt or Demonoid for my torrents.

DVDvideosoft is an excellent program for this, free download off the net, can pick up to 320kbps bitrate. Great for getting that song youve always wanted that you cant find anywhere else.

about time this virus was eradicated I have lost count of jobs I have done where serious system performance degradation was a result of limewire being installed

I have found the only way to restore performance after limewire is a format and reinstall the usual malware tools help a bit but I find performance still lacking I actually saves time starting from scratch with better results
