I have no idea of how you managed that in an EJ20. Car goes no where unless it's on boost :

It's funny how a lot of people say how cheap and simple WRX interiors but don't mention that at least they stay together and not fall to bits :

Nope, not taking the ****..... four hours of labour to remover and replace the front bar, inner wheel arch trims, front wheel, airbox or battery box, headlight assembly.... and that little list isnt exhaustive either could be other little bits and pieces I am forgetting, but it was a stupidly complex job for the dealer service departments to sort out.

Definately rules the Renault out as an option for me..... scared me right off potential ownership.

I'd be getting the new Toyota FR-S/FT86, if I didn't need practicality.

most cars build quality are better than ford, hyundai are building quality cars, i reckon they will release performance models in the next 4-8 years.

Buy that which gives you the biggest boner. I haven't owned a WRX for years (pre-bug eyes) but have owned a Golf sport and TDI Golf in more recent times.

Both cars have very particular strengths and weekneses in comparisont o each other...so go with the boner.

The wrx will bolt away from the gti.

However the quality of the gti is better than the wrx in every which way. Panel fit n finish, seats, refinement, motor will last more than 80000km.

Under 35? Go the WRX.

I say go with what you will be happy to drive in everyday. Sure having more go is great, but if you hate the interior layout with which you must get used to day in and day out, what is the point? For me, interior goodness is still very important. Ultimate go is great and the gti may not win every drag race but it will be no slug either. If you can handle the gti being a bit less potent than the wrx, I still choose the gti due to everything else ticking boxes. Food for thought, it comes down to what takes priority.

Gearbox's used to be a weak point if thrashed, the clutch was used as a fuse to protect it.

Don't know if that still applies to the current model. The 5 speed definately isn't as strong as the 6 speed in the STi.

Another aspect playing on my mind is the factory warranty being offered on each car.

The VW being 3yrs/100,000km and the Subaru being 5yrs/Unlimited kms factory warranty.

How heavily should this play into my decision making? (I intend to keep for around 4-5 years......)

NOT an issue if driven correctly..
Even then they can take alot..

Flat shifting and clutch dumping will shock any gearbox into failure.

IIRC it was typically driveshafts which gave way followed closely by third gear.

Driveshafts I can understand from a 7000rpm clutch dump on a dragstrip.... but just imagine how hard you would be driving the thing to strip out third gear!

Considering I am very gentle on my cars, I'd be disappointed if a driveline failure surfaced.

Are you serious? Our MY09 Forester XT auto never, and I mean never, dipped below 12.0 on a daily commute. Now have an MY11 which is better. Just. Average is 11.6 after 6,000kms. I might add that's going off the trip computer. Haven't done manual calcs as such. My wife drives it most of the time, and she drives like an 80 year-old. When I drive it (a touch harder but rarely beyond 3,500rpm) the fuel economy barely changes.

If I could get 8.0l/100kms I'd eat my hat.

what about a golf GTD...?

i personally would have one of those over a GTI or WRX any day of the week.

my MPS gets smashed by diesel golfs all the time, they are scary. then again my MPS clutch brings new meaning to BORKED.

^ I have owned a little Fiat Punto Sport JTD 1.9 a few years back, it was a fantastic little car, with a grunty turbo diesel and 6 speed drivetrain, however I do find smaller turbo diesels somewhat frustrating in certain driving conditions where the lack of available rpm impedes acceleration, high speed overtaking comes to mind here, where you want a rapid burst of say 80-120 km/h in third gear and they just dont wind up that quickly.

Dont get me wrong, a Golf GTD is a fantastic car and if I were looking for absolute frugality at the expense of outright power there wouldn't be many other contenders in the mix. And after having owned the Fiat I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a turbo diesel passenger car if it were to suit someone else's current requirements. Sadly it just doesn't suit me this time around.

thats funny ive been told by a few GTD owners they go like a scalded cat in any speed in pretty much any gear (all DSG).

2 of the 3 also said that it smashes the GTI they last had in terms of overall power and get up and go.

they are doctors tho :P

I do understand that the Renault Megane Sport is a hell of a hot hatch, goes like sh*^ off a shovel and runs round corners on rails. Not a bad driveaway price either

Sadly its a two door coupe which just doesn't suit my needs. I would like and am looking for a four door sedan/hatchback.

Geez you really mustn't drive it! I have a MY99 (for sale) modified and tuned and even when stock couldn't get below 10's unless it was on the highway and then it was on mid 9's. It still returns the same figures even though it's now tuned. My wife has a MY01 and it also only manages 10.5 and up.

But hey if you can get those figures, then sweet. Never thought of the WRX though as a fuel saving car....

I broke third gear in my MY99 but I've never flatshifted or did any 7000rpm clutch dumps. My drive shafts are still the stock ones and have never been replaced. I just broke third on the street after taking off at a set of lights. Mine is modified to around 200kw atw's though. A lot of gearboxes have been broken due to fitting a heavy duty clutch with the stock box. Mine now has a PPG straight cut 1-4 in it. Bought my car in 2000 and broke third in 2006.

From the MY02 and up, the diff ratio was changed which put a lot less strain on the gearbox but it also meant the cars then revved higher in fifth when doing 100kph.
