This is why the 3.0L commodore is better, that all is anyone looks at. Even though it has better fuel economy and more touque it still has less KW and there for inferior.

Until you look at the 0-100 kph times , then Ecoboost wins by about a second,
that is a lot faster and people will notice that, the 3.0 might win to 160 kph but who really cares.

No way will a 3L Commodore beat the EB Falcon to 160km/h. The 3L Commodore probably does the quarter mile in high 15's @ 140-145km/h (someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm only guessing) The EB will do mid/high 14's at around 155-160km/h.

EB is probably going to be mid 15's for the quarter and the Omega will be longer than anyone cares to measure..

What I was suggesting is 100-160 kph Omega might stand a chance when it can use its higher power
but gee, I wouldn't like to have money on that as it may well lose out to the I-4 Falcon..

Maybe this is also why Holden is down balancing Commodore production in May,
maybe fleet orders aren't rolling in like they used to as managers weigh the alternatives..

If a heavier Evoque can do a 14.9, then id be surprised that if a Falcon could only do a mid 15. Hell a Ecoboost Territory should be able to do a mid 15.

Jim, EB uses the same gearbox ratios and final drive as the I-6, so it's very comparable to big brother
but I have a feeling that Land Rover have gone for a lot more performance and aggressive engine settings.

As I suspected:

Performance (Manufacturer's Estimates): Si4 Automatic
Maximum speed kph 217
Acceleration 0-100kph seconds 7.6.....(similar to Ecoboost Falcon)

In an article last year, Ford Europe's RS engineer said that the 2.0 Ecoboost operates reliably up to 380 hp..

It depends on a lot of things. Like, how good the stock cooling system is, what the stock turbo is like, how much extra boost the bottom end can take, what the gearbox's torque capacity is etc.

If for example, the stock turbo is pushing 18PSI (which I suspect is probably close to true) then a small jump to about 23PSI should be possible with reasonable gains to be had. You could estimate it anywhere from 15kW-40kW and 20Nm-50Nm. The 2L Ecoboost comes in a 205kW/380Nm tune in America in other cars already.

I would suggest that upgrading the intercooler, dump pipe and exhaust should see some pretty healthy gains, and low 13 second passes should be achievable.

All my opinion of course.

The 205kW state of tune was solely for the 'Explorer America' concept which has now become the regular production Explorer that comes with the 2.0Litre Ecoboost in the more common 177kW tune.

The next step up from there in the Ford range is the 184kW of the Focus ST.

Not from Ford directly, but niche UK sports car manufacturer, Radical, offers a 224kW tuned 2.0Litre EcoBoost in its Radical SR3 SL street-legal track-day racer; and is probably what we can expect from a 'mild' aftermarket intake/exhaust/tune.

Mondeo Diesel.............5.1L/100k
Falcon Ecoboost..........6.0
Falcon I6 petrol...........7.6
Falcon ECOLPI.............9.4

My experience with Falcons has been that the claimed fuel consumption figures are very easily reached or improved on. Will be interesting to see if Ecoboost will be the same.

Those figures should be considered the very best fuel economy you can expect at light cruise...
Use cruise control plus A/C and that figure will fall away considerably....

Hey guys, I drove a pre-build ecoboost G6E for a couple of days 2-3 weeks ago and honestly it was an awesome drive!

It is very lively; feels rapid from a stop (faster to the i6 with my seat of the pants) and cruises along with some impressive economy!


I am keen to try the Mondeo with an ecoboost now..

good stuff Dan, what do you notice in the car just trundling along normally, lets say someone who knew nothing about newer model falcons but owned an earlier model .....lets say an el mont, and they hopped in the G6E,
other than the exhaust note would they pick it for a 4 potter do you think?

Guys,

Just to put things into perspective, the petrol I6 makes 350Nm @ 1750rpm just like the Ecoboost 4. This shows that there is no compromise for day-to-day driving. It's only when you thrash it when you will notice the difference. I reckon a detuned EcoLPi Ecoboost would be absolutely amazing and able to return mixed cycle figures of 10L/100km or less. It would be an absolute revelation as turbos and high-octane LPG go together very well indeed.

First off it's a heck of a lot smoother and more refined than an EL; but that comes with the standard newer range anyhow.. haha!
The engine is very quiet during everyday driving, of course you'll know it's there at high rpm though. The exhaust can just be heard, but I'm a fussy listener. That being said, I wouldn't say its intrusive at all however. The consumption I was seeing was actually a bit better than what Ford claim most of the time; but lets wait to see what the production cars run when they hit the roads...

As mentioned above, the ecoboost feels as strong as the i6 in normal to spirited driving, if not a little more rapid from a stop I feel. It does lack a little when driving it hard in comparison, but for most people this is a very small percentage of the time.
The last Falcon I drove before this was the LPI falcon and that felt more suited for the small percentage who DO want to race around at higher speeds.

Where ecoboost does improve significantly IMHO is the better steering and turn in due to the weight reduction up over the front end.

Thanks for the short review and comparison between the different powerplants.

Terrific to note that you saw better than Ford's ADR figures for the economy

Add to that the even better steering. This really could be a revelation!

I'd just like to add that I do NOT work for Ford/FPV or have anything to do with the automotive industry even LOL!
I've been sent a few PM's already asking why I drove the cars and if I'm just a Ford employee talking it up etc..

I know when we were supplied this one, Ford claimed that it was pretty much the only (if not the only) one available at the time and it'd be some time till anything else was ready for testing.
Would have preferred to test a production model in the right spec for our application etc...

Funny thing was nobody other than a couple of taxi drivers in the CBD gave it a 2nd look on the road even with its ecoboost badging and all the kms travelled.
