Not sure if that applies in this case.

Jetstar has been hugely accommodating with me with about half a dozen cancellations. It does involve a voucher for later travel, but I have not lost a dollar yet in any penalties. But if you buy the cheap non flex ticket, then want your money back when there is no travel advice between to two points, well its buyer beware.
Yeah that's kool.
Wonder if insurance could cover this, probably a tall order seen as they often can't cover consumers cars properly

Travel insurance? Pretty sure all of them have covid-related exclusions.

I'm not sure that you'll have success with this path. In this case, the non-refunded component is not to cover the original service that was purchased, rather the fee is to cover the costs of the 'service' of administering the booking, subsequent cancellation and re-advertising the now available spot to others.

But it can't do any harm to try.

Problem in this case is that the Darwin event hasn't actually been cancelled. The Winton event has been and from what I understand ticket holders were offered a full refund. But I wouldn't imagine that any insurance Supercars, or any other agency, had/have would cover someone coming from interstate not being able to attend because of border closures etc. Or making a personal decision not to attend because they consider the risk too high or it has become inconvenient for them to attend.

These things are often way more complicated than what they initially appear on the surface.

I just want to make it clear that I empathise with zilo because of the amount of money he is out of pocket after having to cancel.

Yeah, you're right. I should have said the round this weekend has been rescheduled.

We had a similar experience when they called off Nitro circus in Perth (pre covid)
Banks are all talk with chargeback options, they couldn't care less, the transaction is completed on they're end. They just fobbed us off.
Same with Fair trading, toothless tiger.
If they are a member of Live performance Australia (LPA) you could try there but we couldn't find a contact method other than a PO box.
By that point we just bent over and copped it sweet as the time to potential reward ratio was becoming to great.
