Hi,
Excuse me for my ignorance, but i am going to do an oil change on my oldies 1990 1.6L auto laser. I have done heaps of oil changes and services to my 1994 landcruiser 4WD which is a easy because i can get under it to drain the oil without a car jack. My oldies are going to get rid of their laser in about 9 months because its old and worn out, needs engine mounts, new exhaust, rough idling etc. The list goes on, it has done 210 000kms and they dont want to take it to a mechanic this last time. I will do a minor service just to keep it going around town, eg oil change and filters. Where about should i look for the sump plug to drain the oil? Can i undo it without a hoist? Should i also change the fuel filter? I have not researched into this car only into my cruiser ute, so any helpful advice is appreciated! |

you can just jack the front of the car up
if you intend to sell the car as is without fixing all of its problems I would just change the oil ---jack the car up --use your common sense- jack up at the front and be safe - support the car on a stand if you go under it the engine has to have a sump so look for the nut on it dont undo the gearbox nut dont worry about the oil filter change if you want -take off the fuel filter and just clean it out with air or clean fuel give it a shake and add a bit of metho shake it out and put that back on the car as for the rest of the car well if it needs work or parts to be replaced to sell registered thats another issue

I disagree with the above. NEVER do an oil change without changing the oil filter. The oil filter has about 300ml of disgusting oil left in it, that mixes with the new oil, gives it about half the life it would have if you changed the oil filter.
There will be a jack in the boot of the Laser. Under the carpet. Jack the front up, and look for a nut under a big silver (or oil stained) barrel shape under the bay. Obviously you know what a sump looks like having done your Landcruiser. The oil filter is up and behind the engine, just need to lay under it and unscrew with your hand. They can be tight but i've never done one that I couldn't work out with a bit of elbow grease. If you think the fuel filter hasn't been done in a long time, do that. Could be one of the problems of your rough idle. They're only about $40. Also which engine mount needs replacing? Cos 2 of the 3 are easy as pie to do. I'd say the front, which takes most of the punishment. About $100 there and stops the 'clunk' on takeoff. If you have any other questions feel free.

If the owner was keeping the car yes I would change the oil filter every
10-000km along with the oil Did you see the kms that car has traveled and its problems and read the post and understood it to say the car was being sold off soon ! I assumed the car would not reach that km before they get rid of it and not have the other problems fixed I agree with your statement about the oil filter as well no argument there under normal circumstances :1syellow1 (VippiN- I disagree with the above. I told my dad to go get the oil and oil filter.
Repco had a deal- 5L Castrol GTX2 20-50 and filter for $28 ---Problem solved! He said he did not want to bother about fuel filter (label from last service said 220 000km) and he said dont even bother about changing or cleaning the plugs and dont worry about the air filter. He will end up either selling it for parts or as is, (so many people think lasers are cool, which they are not , so he wont have any problems getting rid of it!) But thats just my opinion which is why i own a 4WD toyota landcruiser ute! |
