Today my wife was driving the au wagon and because it was hot she turned the fan in 3. there was a massive clattering sound so she turned it off again.Within
ten seconds the whole car filled with white smoke so she pulled over and opened all the windows, and when the smoke cleared drove home. I cannot get into the fan system and dont know what was the cause of the fire. Any clues guys? I need answers cos, she wont drive it any more. |

At a guess I would say that either the fan has **** itself or the speed controller.
Look at this thread for controller information

After the event the fan is working normaly but i am not going to test it again till tomorrow morning. Dont want to start a fire again. By the way, is there any way of cleaning the leaves and crap out of the fan?

a bloke did say to me you could get through the fan speed resistor opening with a vacuum and a flexible rubber nozzle,
on the left hand side of the heater box behind the glove box once the resistor was removed ......... however a member did try it without much success. |

From memory the fan speed resistor on those consists mainly of a resistance wire that is cooled by the air from the fan. Gets really hot so if a nice dry leaf is close by.... As Mik says, pull it out and see for yourself.

Pulling the fan out is a "dash out" job. Some thing I would not do for obvious reasons.
Sounds like I will have to carry a fire extinguisher in future. |

I've had a leaf get in before. Suddenly one day I could hear a buzzing sound as the fan was hitting it. No smoke or anything particularly worrying, just an annoying noise. Continued to come and go for a few months, and now it's gone altogether!
