Default New country to form within Australia? These residents want it

A big joke or not, residents of Lamb Island, fed up with all three levels of government, want their own micronation.

http://www.news.com.au/national-news...-1226731669108
Quote:
ON a sleepy Queensland island where there's more going on in the mangroves than on the streets, there are secessionist rumblings.

About 450 locals on tiny Lamb Island, about 4.5km east of Brisbane, are preparing to break away from Australia to form the Independent Republic of Nguduroodistan.

Independence campaigner and local shop owner Tony Gilson says the proposed micronation's name comes from Nguduroo, the indigenous name for the island.

Mr Gilson says residents are fed up with getting a raw deal on services from the local, state and federal governments and have decided to go it alone.

"As straw poll, about 90 per cent support independence," he told AAP.

"I've been talking to people here at the shop for about a week about it and I've had a couple of beers up the club and there's similar sort of reaction."

He said three tiers of government had failed to give residents value for money so local experts were working out how the island could be more self-sufficient and cut living costs.

Apologetically putting the phone down to take fish and chips orders, Mr Gilson returned to say a referendum had been organised for October 19.

If successful there would be a plebiscite on the new republic's 35-page constitution and a caretaker government consisting of a king and queen, a prime minister and 21 ministers.

Mr Gilson also said local yachtsman Clint Mcdonald stands ready to defend the micronation's borders from invasion.

He told AAP the aspiring science and technology minister had just walked into his shop.

"Hi John, just talking to AAP about the referendum," Mr Gilson said.

"Oh, John says hello mate."

The campaigner said his proposed country would seek advice from the head of Australia's most famous micronation, Hutt River Province's Prince Leonard in Western Australia.

But he said Nguduroodistan would have to find it's own way.

"I think things are moving a little quickly already," Mr Gilson said.

"But you know, we've still got to give it a shot."

Why, what's so different about Queensland? There are many unofficial micronations in other states like NSW

Oh the poor inhabitants of the Southern Moreton Bay islands (SMBI)
First they move there because it's a cheap way of buying your own house.
A good percentage moved there years ago as a way of avoiding having to find a job.
It costs a lot to service these islands because everything has to bought in and taken out by barge.
Now the ones that do work want even more car parks with security so they can access the mainland. Mind you they want to use it for free and for everyone else to foot the bill
All the while they have turned a picturesque part of Redland bay into an ugly looking car park to accommodate them.
All their public transport is subsidised to the hilt but they want it cheaper and some even want it for free.
They don't want to pay for their mainland car park and it's now almost impossible to find a car and trailer space if you want to use your boat which shares the same small marina as the ferry terminal to the islands.

As a Redland Bay rate and tax payer I hope they succeed from Australia.
That way they can pay the full cost of the public transport and the Redland City Council can charge them the real cost of removing their rubbish from the island and they can then return the Redland bay foreshore to it's former glory instead of the car park it has become

Let them secede from Australia

Let them supply their own health services - ours aren't great but I bet they don't have a hospital on their island.

And when the sea levels rise, will they also expect our Navy to rescue them.

And take away their Australian passports, they will have to go through immigration every time they visit our shores.

I'm happy that anybody who doesn't want to be Australian can leave

Yep still there but the constitutional and legal loopholes that existed in the 1960's that allowed him to create the Province are long gone.

We don't know how good we've got it. go to the US and see what you get as far as health care is concerned. it is really user pays there, no insurance? too bad we'll treat someone who can pay.
if your insurance company doesn't think your treatment is appropriate for you they will block it regardless of your doctors opinion. we have a far better health system than many give credit for

This made me laugh.
Mr Gilson also said local yachtsman Clint Mcdonald stands ready to defend the micronation's borders from invasion.

Sounds like there's been some inbreeding on that island.

Why don't all the islands join in and save mainland Redland City rate payers a fortune in subsidised every thing. Totaly agree with all you have posted.
