Unhappy Strange smells

Hi,

My LR Focus Zetec is smelling really bad after a bit of driving. It smells like a typical clutch or brake smell, but gear changes are fine, clutch isn't slipping and the brakes seem to be OK. I had rear pads done about 20K ago and front rotors and pads about 40K ago.

Any suggestions on how I can isolate the cause? Any other suggestions on what may be causing an asbestos like burning smell?

Thanks,

MK

Looks like that might be the case. The air con isn't working as well as it usually does and the battery was flat the other day so I'd say it is an oil leak that is hitting the exhaust as well as getting on the belt that drives alternator and a/c compressor.

Any idea what gasket / join / seal this might be from?

Looks like I'll give the local Ford dealer another chance to show me how much they know about Focii. :(

If you suspect this oil leak, while the car is running with the aircon on, look down at the exhaust system through the engine bay and see if there's any smoke from it. That way you can eliminate that as the cause.

Was a stretched accessory drive belt with fragments of the old belt ingested into the alternator. $175 later (new belt + 0.4 hrs labour) my battery is charging again, the air con is working and the burning smell seems to be lessening.

Thanks for the suggestions!
