You's. I can not tell you how much that annoys me when I hear that. And for those of YOU out there who don't know the differance. It is YOU whether you are refering to 1 or 1 thousand people.

No. It should be "People can't talk properly". But you get the idea.

Today I said to the missus "There's a lady who had a 6 kg baby on the news". What I should have (not of) said is "There's a lady on the news, who had a 6kg baby" She didn't have the baby on the news, which is what the first way I said it implies.

The first time I went to NZ, I stayed at a mate's place in Auckland and his little sister kept asking me where I was from. It took me a few times to realise that she was having a dig at me for pronoucing it as 'Oztraya'.

After that, I just said I was from Aussie as you Kiwis do. Which in itself was hard to get used to, as Aussie to us, is, well us. We don't call Australia, Aussie.

Another was trying to buy an Esky there, it took a few goes before we realised we had to ask for a Chilly Bin.

As one of very few young people who refuses to speak like an idiot, I reckon that the English language is turning into American. just like fashion, music, social practices etc.
Damn Yanks... why do Aussie kids reckon that they need to act like the yankee stars on the idiot box.

And the other thing that Sh!ts me to tears is when people write like they're texting. I have a friend who failed a school certificate english essay because she thought she would be clever and save time by writing everything in sms language.

I couldn't agree more with you on your first point, and you have got to be kidding us - SMS style writing for an english essay?!?

Try being a singing teacher! I spend 4-5 hours a day trying to teach people how to shape words properly, and convince teenage girls that singing through your nose like Britany Spears is not "pretty".
Then comes the battle of explaining a Diphthong vowel to someone who is really not sure what a vowel is .....let alone one that wears thongs....*sigh*

I studied Jazz vocals at Uni, and my 83 yr old singing teacher was English...grew up in India. She would simply walk away from us in the middle of a conversation if she couldn't understand us. It was probaby the best thing she could have done to improve people's articulation of words.

she's about as sharp as custard that girl... probably wouldn't have passed anyway!

Same girl got busted during School Certificate Trials for trying to tell the supervisor that she was a diabetic and therefore needed to take a 2L bottle of coca-cola into the exam... :yeees:
