BUGGA! Just spent all that time in Photoshop making a nice sig and now I can't use it. :
I'll have to see if I can reduce it to avatar size.

lol - every key I have to press multiplies the potential for computer disaster! So the less typing I do the safer it is for everyone.

The problem with pics in sigs is bandwidth. For those not on broadband this really sucks. Worse for me because I don't even get 56K!

You can make two templates of the site, one that has the signature code in the config, and one without, so that 56k users wouldnt be able to see why others could. Or you could leave it as it is.

Or there's the option to turn off signatures via User CP>Edit Options>Untick Show Signatures. Simple. Easy. Everyone's happy. If bandwidth is the problem, this should solve it for you. **** poor excuse this bandwidth usage crap.

Sig pics are the gheyiest thing ever.

People know what your car is like, if not post it up in the show n shine. Not everyone even cares about your car, so why should I have to see some photoshop of it in your sig?

Im sure there was a big poll/thread on the issue when the forums started.

Sig pics are tacky and unprofessional IMO.

Pretty much as I was going to say. Even with broadband it's a PITA. If I wanted to know what car you drove I can read the text and if I was more curious I could look up pictures of it.

I beg your pardon... let me make it very clear, there will be no images in signatures. If this is an issue address it with me via PM and we will solve it immediately.

Who said it had to be a pic of your car? The sig I made doesn't have my car in it at all.

All I did was ask a question. I didn't realise there were so many raw nerves lurking about.

Certainly not an issue for me. All I did was post a question as a new(ish) member to find out what the policy is.

I have no argument with the decision or explanation. In fact, I hadn't thought of it in terms of people without broadband. Nor had I thought about it in terms of bandwidth from a hosting point of view. 25,000 members with picture sigs is a frightening amount of bandwidth! And a usage bill I don't even wanna know about.

i agree, couple of other forums i visit have sig pics everywhere and tis meh..... get very cluttered, specially when there are only short posts , pictures everywhere.........

IMO a small pic of the car (or whatever) in the avatar, and a brief explanation / link to pics of the car in the sig........ is plenty......

Maybe an admin can post up the daily bandwidth and cost. Another forum I'm on ditched pic-sigs, and cut the avatar size, and saved an absolute fortune in running costs. And it was only a small forum with less then 2000 members. As for the option of turning sigs and avatars etc off, that is a valid option. But how often have you looked at archived threads on some forums with no images and ended up clicking the full version link? I know I do every time.

it's safe to say the shortness wasn't aimed in your direction, rather at at member who looked like they felt the need to be rude to express their opinion.
Bandwidth issues or not, we are not going to have pictures in sigs. It was a fair question to ask though.
I am not able to post exact figures ( i don't have them ) but I can say that we get a terrabyte a month and we are nowhere near it.. at the moment... but we are close enough to have to consider an upgrade in the next few years.

A terrabyte is 1000 Gigabytes. Just asked my resident computer geek (aka the wife!)

ter·a·byte (těr'ə-bīt')n.
  1. A unit of computer memory or data storage capacity equal to 1,024 gigabytes (240 bytes).
  2. One trillion bytes.

Your allowed links in your sig, which is enough in my opinion.
