ford territory worth keeping

hey peeps i have a 2004 ford territory that i received off some friends that were moving to canada and couldnt trade it in so i picked the old girl up for 5 gs
but the problem is its still on finance so i cant purchase it untill they pay it out..
but long story short its been 1 half years of driving it insuring it and repairing the car as little as i can till i know that it will be mine etc... done a contract for a year it was meant to be paid off.
anyway my dilemma is it needs alot of repairs and i mean alot...
eg front diff bushes which k frame needs to be dropped
the engine has done 289000ks so not much life left in her. and before i got it went 30000ks between services.
all bushes in suspension need doing
ball joints
4 new tyres
interior falling apart power e windows tailgate struts ahhhh the list is endless

so what should i do
currently the car is out of rego and sitting in the shed because i dont want to put more money into something that i dont even own
should i still buy it say in a year for the agreed price of $5000
if they have paid it off in a year as they still owe $15000 on it.
or should i give it back as is to their parents and forget about it
ahh forgot to mention in the last year i have spent $3000 on repairs
so give it back
or keep it and pay $5000 for it when and if they pay it out which who knows when.
so help me out peeps

thats what i think but the missus wants a few anwsers to help out
the other thing is i always wanted to do a 351 conversion on a new car if possible
so 351 territory haha

they have still been paying $500 a month but they said it would be paid of 6 months ago but we found out they purchased a exporer over in canada and they still owe $15000 to date so in a year and half they paid $5000 of there $20000 loan so i can expect the territory will be parked for at least a year untill i know they have paid the loan or just give it back and cut losses and put $5000 into my coupe and ute haha

Lets see if I've got this right.....

You've paid over $3,000 in repairs for a car that's out of rego, isn't yours, has done nearly 300,000kms and needs almost a full rebuild inside and out, and then pay some people (who still owe money on the car) $5,000 !!

Asking if it's worth keeping is a trick question, right?

Tell the finance company where it is and tell them to take it! (assuming the payments are no longer being made)

can't fit an engine that is older than the vehicle itself.
Also would need to pass the current Euro emmissions standard at the time the vehicle came onto the market.

then I spotted your comment about the terri's motor having 289,000 klm and therefore "not much life left in her"..not sure what that means, ford inline 6 engines are hardly broken in at that stage!

I'd be letting it go. Friends of mine have just sold their lovely black Terri Ghia (4 years old with 90,000kms on it for $17,000. Was immaculate - they just wanted a quick sale. There will be heaps of bargains in the next year as fuel keeps climbing and the economy gets tougher ....... and it will.

Yeah but with 30k service intervals it would be fairly sludged up inside.

yes i know these motors can do 500 000ks easy but with the neglect this car received on the motor gearbox and everyday maintenance i would be surprised if the car has another 30,000 in it before something goes bang.
i already replace awd transfer case in it 3months after i got it. i dont plan on putting anything else in it..
we wrote to the owners last night told them to organise someone to pick it up as we dont want it ...

This is of course,"correct" . But Superbird was crazy in the first place for trying to buy an encumbered car in the first place. How did he manage to insure it if he did not own it? The people that took his money obviously had no intention of paying the finance Co, They have not only ripped off the finance Co, but also their "friend". I guess that the only thing that he can do is move the car from his property, Inform his "friends", go lick his wounds, and have nothing more to do with the car or his former friends

the car was on a lend to buy contract ...so basically we drove it for a year and it was meant to be paid off in that time and we pay $5000 for it then.. we paid non owners insurance etc..
we have been driving it for a year and half now done some repairs on it thinking it would be ours in this time...
but for the last 6 months we didnt spend a thing on it and its now run into the ground

we were never going to buy an encumbered car thats just crazy, we were borrowing it until it was no longer encumbered, and they have been paying it off, they hoped to get a loan in canada (from either a bank or family) to pay it out in that year, but all that fell through and no banks will lend to them until they've been living there longer, they are paying the minimum amount on it and the loan term ends the end of 2013... which is still too far away to wait!

i also forgot to mention i was left with there 5 year old staffie dog, because they are banned in canada... so i have there car and dog haha

but yeah basically.. me and my dog need to still run and go lick our wounds, and have nothing to do with them or the car.

Sounds like they are trying to wash their hands of the debt. I would try everything to get out of the deal.

As for the V8 transplant idea, someone has put a 5.4L in one but it was a 2WD model. That would be the only one I'd bother with. A 351 would only work if it wasn't street registered, and it's old technology anyway. Wouldn't bother.
