If you dont give the manufacturers support, they go somewhere cheaper. It doesnt get much simpler than that.

Welcome to the real world. Government support it, or it goes. Only a stupid management would pump money into a loss making business.

Let's say Ford decide to stay in Oz but stop making falcons and only do imports. How many people get laid off..lets say half their staff. That's 750 directly (not including suppier companies). The gov't money was to keep the falcon in Oz for the next four years. To put those 750 ex employees on the dole(single, no kids rate) is $9,500,000 per year or 38 million over the next four. I think i'd rather see them employed, spending more money (than dole money) and keep the economy moving.

If you where the CEO of Ford & the Tialand government is going to give you millions to invested in Tialand & then the Australia government is going to give you nil to invest in Australia, which country will you put your investment into? This is what Australia is up against!! The car companies invest far, far more into this country than what the government goes with support. Do you want this invest to go oversea?? And all this before you even talk about income tax, company tax, carbon tax!! Maybe other industries didn't get money becuase they where not going to invest in Australia like the car companies do.. I don't really have an answer for that.. |

There is no way my mum could have driven the car... she hated dads old XF and it seemes the positions are still very similar. I feel the Focus has a mch better driving position. I look fwd to seeing how the sales go for the new Falcon. Hopefully it will be good results for Ford Aus

the really simple solution to keep our auto companies and all of our manifacturing companies for that matter here in australia is to bring tariffs back in ,that would make the imported cars too expensive to buy here and our local cars would be in our price range ,same with all the other products but the gove wont do that cause we have a global village and we must compete with the rest of the world ,and eventually we will lose the lot ,no doubt about that ,simple fact is we cant compete cause nobody here wants to live like dogs

Thanks for the write up. I would seriously have considered one over the I6. My XR50 is my first 6 cyl car and I'm hating the fact that I have to pay more for rego than my WRX. Only thing that helps is that my insurance is about $300 cheaper at $560.

To get a better Falcon, it needs to achieve sales at a “globally” sustainable level. That makes it financially viable, and allows sufficient investment in development and production facilities. A better Falcon would also better meet the requirements of the export markets, so in a sense it’s a catch 22. But it also comes down to cost. So yes, some level of net tariff against companies that don’t manufacture in Australia, but also export enhancement to make it viable to build the Falcon & Territory for substantial export markets. With a decent engine, at the right price the Territory should sell well in many markets. The Falcon, if cheap enough, could sell in the USA as a Mercury. |

Interesting write up .. I'm actually very happy that they made it almost silent .. If it really does have the power of a BA XT then I'd think it would have more than enough power for the masses. Nice one!

So unless the Aussie falls back to 70 cents or there abouts, our exports are hugely overpriced compared to competitors in US and Europe and any lowering of prices to match would merely evaporate sales. Caprice PPV is competing with PIs selling for $24,000.... Quote:

All this argument about the government supporting or not supporting auto manufacturers in this country.
The biggest Govt support for an industry is mining/resources via the diesel fuel tax rebate, which incidentally the Greens are trying to get rid of. Grants to the auto makers are a pittance in comparison.

Forget the ecoboost engines, Ford should bring out the PowerStroke Diesel engines in the Falcon!

Ford have a diverse and well thought out range in the FG2 Falcon There are 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines as well as LPG. There is a great manual as well as auto and they are well priced.
Instead of constantly complaining why not just go out and buy one....... |

Powerstroke is the large capacity 6.7 litre V8 diesel - previously Ford had 6.0 and 7.3 litre V8s co-developed with Navistar (International) |

My cars were all bottom of the range, no options with no car sound except a radio, no mags, no fully sic mods and were my prides and joy. Of course I did not have the latest phone, game consoles, computer, name brand fashion and drank cheap beer instead of alcopops, only went to a fast food shop on very rare occasions, did not have a credit card or 43, did not own a TV/Stereo/(insert expensive toy here) went to the beach for a swim or the footy to watch a game for free rather than watching a movie in $30 seats at a cinema. A number of my friends also had new cars. They also worked hard and did without "trendy luxuries". A new Falcon is $30k (a years wage at entry level). That is only $100+/- a week on finance if you have no deposit, much less if you do. So you CAN afford a new Falcon if you really want one..... |

Also doesn’t matter what we get paid in, what matters is the price. Yes, Aussie cars are more expensive to make, no **** Sherlock, if they weren’t everybody would be manufacturing here. Which is where export enhancement comes in. As for Mercury, they stopped building distinct cars decades ago, and were recently would up as a marketing entity, but Ford have left the door open to selling them as a badge. Whatever, the badge worn by an Aussie Falcon would be a marketing decision. They might decide to resurrect the Falcon badge, or call it the Kangaroo, doesn’t really matter. |
