I think a bit of performance pressure has come into play here. I hate busy boat ramps, nothing is more unerving than having a dozen sets of eyes glaring at you when reversing down the ramp.

I have no issue reversing my boat, and agree that it is a skill that many have trouble mastering. If I was not confident with my reversing skills I would have done much the same as the old chap had I had an audience.

Can't see anything sad in this story. The guy has obviously got his car down the ramp, boat in the water and come back in after having a couple of hours or day out handling whatever conditions the water threw up at him.Good luck to him, and I hope (as I'm sure he does) that he can do it for many years to come
My old man is pushing 80 and drives his old Mazda 929 (circa 1974? no power steer) to golf 4 days a week, towing the trailer he carts his gear around in.
He can't reverse into the golf club car park to save his life, but it is not sad...he, (like many) just donesn't reverse well...

they have upgraded it by the looks and you are now locked into a 1 lane ramp now
if it is the guy I am thinking he is and will always be one of the best metal fabricators I know and he did buy both new at the same time from memory

I hope he doesn't take it to heart and stop using his boat

Sweet boat being towed by a great car!!! Look at the style of that boat...i'd rather have that than an anonymous little tinny!

Well done for getting out there at his age and not driving some boring little Hyundai down to bowls or bingo!

Reading that I thought you were going to say he ended up with his classic car in the water. A bit sad yeah, but I'm glad nothing unfortunate happened because he was too stubborn.

That's the ones...

As for "flying"? Not so sure...it might be quick, but a modern four stroke of half the size...maybe even a quarter the size...and a light modern-construction boat would run rings around it.

...but would it be as stylish...? I think not...

I didn't find it sad either. I cant back my car and trailer now so I wont be any better at 80! Good on him for still being a tough old nut and out there having a go...most his age wouldn't be.

I dont know about that, 4 strokes are heavy and torquey. 2 strokes are lighter and have crazy high revving power. I would think this would still go very well!

Hahaa that would be funny to watch!

Remember a conversation i had with an old lady in her 80s who was waiting for a taxi at her home. We were doing road works in her street and we had arranged to let the taxi in quickly to pick her up.

She said (sadly) no one visted her anymore.... her kids didnt, or the grand kids...then shes says... ****** em all when i die they wont get a cent, i've left it all to the salvos!

Poor bloke, it get's hard to admit when you become to old to do stuff like that.

On a sidenote, it used to p*** off the guys at the local Boat club when i was growing up that this young guy on his L's could whip into his dads Nissan Patrol, drive up to the ramp, reverse down it in one go and power dump the boat into the water. Also great to annoy the 'Riches' with their $$$ boats, that took forever to get in on the trailer at the end of the day, and me and dad just driving ours straight on the trailer, and out in 30 secs.
