im sure dealers dont actually need as many demos as what are registered

There was a prime example of this in the early 1980s. Holden was under threat of losing having the number 1 selling car in this country which it had held for three decades. At the end of 1981, there were a lot of new Commodores registered which added to the sales numbers only to be deregistered the following month (Jan 1982). Big controversy at that time.

Mind you, Ford were replacing staff lease cars on a 6-week cycle at the time.
