Default Glow-in-the-dark road installed in the Netherlands

Glow-in-the dark road markings have replaced streetlights along a 500m stretch of highway in the Netherlands this week.

The initial design was proposed back in 2012 by Studio Roosegaarde as an attempt to bring technology and design into the real world with practical applications, Liat Clark from Wired UK reports.

The result is pretty magical, with one Netherlands news report claiming: "It looks like you are driving through a fairytale."

The glow-in-the-dark paint was constructed using a photo-luminescnet owner integrated into road paint.

There's been no new as yet as to how this luminous paint will hold up against wear and tear, but it can glow for a steady eight hours if it's powered by the sun during the day.

The founder of Studio Roosegaarde, Daan Roosegaarde, told Wired UK it was originally planned that weather markings such as snowdrops would appear on the road when the temperature reached a certain level, but for now the highway in Oss features just the glow-in-the-dark markings. And even that involved a lot of bureaucratic hoop jumping.
