Default Victoria - Operation Mayday - Unroadworthy vehicles

Just a heads up

Operation Mayday - Unroadworthy vehicles

Police will swarm the west of the state today for a mass traffic blitz targeting un-roadworthy vehicles in the lead up to winter.

Operation Mayday will see police perform vehicle checks at more than 45 sites in major towns and cities across Western Victoria.

The operation involves general duties police and members from Highway Patrol Units in Geelong, Torquay, Colac, Warrnambool, Portland, Hamilton, Moorabool, Ballarat, Horsham, Stawell, Northern Grampians, Greater Bendigo, Campaspe, Macedon Ranges, Central Goldfields, Mildura, Robinvale and Swan Hill.

Western Region Road Policing Inspector Michael Baker said police would not only focus on major freeways and highways as part of the operation, but also local roads and back streets.

“Over recent years we have seen an increase in collisions during May and June and a contributing factor to this trauma has been the condition of vehicles,” Insp Baker said.

“As the cooler weather now approaches and the roads become wet and icy, the safety of all vehicles on the roads becomes critical.

“It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure their vehicle has roadworthy tyres, all seatbelts are fully functioning and steering and brakes are serviced.”

Insp Baker said it was vital that all road users understood tyres were one of the most important parts of a vehicle.

“Tyres are your only contact point with the road and those in poor condition increase your stopping distance and reduce a driver’s ability to react to road hazards,” he said.

Operation Mayday will take place on Wednesday 22 May.
