http://www.v8supercar.com.au/news/la...=&gid=32598143 Very well done everybody! Ford fans from a leading internet forum have rallied together to recognise Craig Lowndes' 2006 V8 Supercar season and support the RSPCA. Enthusiasts from the popular www.fordforums.com.au website crowned Lowndes their '2006 People's Champion' in recognition of his successful 2006 season, in which he finished second after taking four round wins including the Bathurst 1000. Money was raised among the web-based community to purchase a trophy commemorating Lowndes' season, with the remaining money - $450 - forming a donation to the RSPCA. A handful of members from the site travelled to the Exchange Hotel in Kilcoy last week, to present Lowndes with the trophy and donation. "We've had fans from all over the country contribute to this cause, which all took shape after Craig's great season in 2006," Shane Warren, one of the organisers of the trip, said. "In the end, seven of us travelled to Kilcoy to meet Craig and hand over the trophy and cheque, and we were fortunate enough to spend a couple of hours with him, which we really appreciate; it was an afternoon we'll all remember for a very long time. "The work the RSPCA do is something everyone can associate with, so we are thrilled to be able to help them out." Lowndes, who has been an ambassador for the RSPCA since late 2005, was grateful for the gesture and pleased to see V8 Supercar fans supporting the RSPCA. "It's an amazing sign of how passionate V8 Supercar fans are, to organise something of this scale," Lowndes said. "Some members in the group travelled quite a distance to get to Kilcoy, which itself speaks volumes of their dedication to the sport. "It's great that fans are supporting the RSPCA, a charity which I support myself and believe in wholeheartedly." The 2007 V8 Supercar Championship Series starts this weekend in Adelaide, with the Clipsal 500, an event Lowndes won in 1999 and has since taken an additional three race wins. |
