Default Tailem Bend Motorsport park sold

Very interesting to see where this goes, anyone got any more info on this and what if any impact this will have on AIR?

Tailem bend preferred choice for new motorsport complex
FIRST ON 7: Tailem Bend has been selected as the South Australian Government’s preferred choice for a new motorsport complex.

Mitsubishi’s old test track has been bought by the Peregrine Corporation, which owns and operates ‘On The Run’ service stations.

A handful of potential sites were identified including Gillman, the Adelaide International Raceway Monarto and Tailem Bend.

Recreation and Sport Minister Leon Bignell asked the Confederation of Australian Motorsport to find the best venue.

“They came back to us recommending that Tailem Bend is the most suited site for a motorsport complex,” Mr Bignell said.

The track was being used by a not-for-profit group whose lease runs out at the end of the year.

The Coorong Council recently put the property up for sale and it was bought by the Peregrine Corporation.

The Shahin family aims to transform the old venue into a world class track, but critics say it is too far away from Adelaide.

“Commercially, I don’t think it’s viable, it’s only going to be good in my opinion as a club level track, not as a motorsport facility for the general public,” Port Adelaide-Enfield mayor Gary Johanson said.

Other agree it won’t suit grassroots racing.

“The inability for the local community participants able to gain access on a Wednesday night or a Friday night is certainly a big hole for us, it’s a major concern,” Malcolm Bulley from the National Drag Racing Association said.

The SA Government has not committed any funds to upgrade the Tailem Bend track.

Whats the current track layout?

40 Million is a considerable investment into an existing facility, adding another V8 round in South Australia would be good for the sport and great for club/grass roots level guys in SA.

Wouldnt really call it a track now. Just a bit've straight bitumen with a a couple curvy bits.
Large bit've land tho.
The Shahin boys are massive revheads with multimillions of dollars worth of cars at any time.
I can't wait to see what happens. I heard today they expect a 12 month turnaround.

A facility closer to Adelaide would be better at attracting spectators especially those not familiar to drag racing.

I would love to see the plans for Tailem Bend, 30 mill was spent on WSID so 40 mill should be able to build a track of similar quality

I disagree, not unless it's put in Rundall Mall. It's a Motorsport Park, be happy you will have something worthwhile, while Victoria still has squat.

Cant think of the guy organising it but only a few month ago the bloke had to can the meet at AIR because of lack of support, I hope Tailem Bend does better but as stated above, Adelaidens are notorios for hating/whinging about driving anywhere, when I use to tell people I lived at Aldinga Beach when on jobs near Salisbury I use to get strange looks and statements thats where I go for my holidays or I have a holiday shack there???

Travelling the same "time" in Sydney traffic could be as little as only travelling 30kms LMAO

How long did it take all the racers from south of the city to get to AIR? Or us blokes from the mid north or the Riverland?
Stop belly aching and get behind this!

Sure in a 'perfect' world, a motorsport complex on the outskirts (say where AIR is) or Gillman like originally suggested years ago.

But Tailem Bend isnt that far really. About 100km form the cbd? Atleast there is a nice freeway with 100kmh all the way.

Mallala is maybe 70km?

What are other tracks like to travel to/from around the country?
I know Calder isnt far from the Melbourne cbd and Heathcote is a couple hours away.

Depending where you live in Brisbane willowbank can be a fair drive, but its open Wednesday and Saturday nights for test n tunes.

Takes me about 40minutes to drive there, then $45 to race, which includes a passenger to spectate as well.

Perth Motorplex is about 35km south of the CBD. But in the northern suburbs it can be over a 60km drive. And with peak hour traffic, it can take over an hour to get there for a Wednesday night street meet.

The closer it is to the city the shorter its lifespan will be. Once upon a time there was only one house near AIR and no curfew, few years later a lot of houses and people complaining about noise and smoke, then came the curfew.

Cheers guys.
Sounds like for us in Adelaide, it'll be a comparable trip to most of you's in a worse case scenario (60+mins)
