Default New RTA campaign: Get Your Hand Off It

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/newsevents...e-excuses.html

EDIT: I can't believe my tax dollars paid for this crap...

Quote:

No more excuses – get your hand off it

Roads Minister Duncan Gay today launched a major Centre for Road Safety marketing campaign to address the serious and dangerous issue of mobile phone driver distraction.

Mr Gay said the “Get Your Hand Off It” campaign uses traditional advertising and a YouTube video to highlight the excuses motorists make so they can hold their mobile phone while driving.

“Holding your mobile phone to call or text while driving is extremely dangerous, and threatens your safety and that of your passengers, other motorists and pedestrians,” Mr Gay said.

“This behaviour needs to change. ‘Get Your Hand Off It’ provides the community with a cheeky phrase that empowers them to speak out against friends and family who use their phones in a reckless manner behind the wheel.

“The video addresses in an unconventional way the danger of using a handheld phone behind the wheel and references some of the common excuses used to justify such dangerous and illegal behaviour.

“It amazes me that people pick up their phone and take their eyes off the road to make and receive calls, send and check texts and emails or check Facebook and Twitter all while they’re at the wheel of a moving vehicle.

“It is reckless and dangerous behaviour that can and does have disastrous and tragic results,” Mr Gay said.

Figures from the State Debt Recovery Office indicate that in 2012 there were 42,893 infringements issued to motorists for using a mobile phone while driving.

While two thirds of the driving population agree that using their mobile phone while driving is dangerous, statistics show that many do it regardless.

“Our research into this emerging issue has shown that 49 per cent of motorists make calls using a handheld phone while driving,” the Minister said.

“A further 55 per cent indicated that they take calls while driving.

“More than a third of those surveyed in the 20-29 age group indicated that they texted while driving. That’s a frightening statistic, because it’s such a dangerous activity,” he said.

The “Get Your Hand Off It” campaign is aimed at all genders and all age groups, but a video placed on YouTube is aimed at the primary target market of 17-33 years.

“We placed a video on YouTube last week that playfully reminds motorists to ‘Get Your Hand Off It’,” Mr Gay said.

“We’ve wanted to do a social media campaign for some time, and this campaign, with its subject matter and young target market was an ideal fit.

“We needed to work with someone who understands You Tube and were impressed by the way Derek Anderson engages with young people through his off-beat videos.

“Derek collaborated with the team that developed “the Bondi Hipsters” and “Beached As” to help us communicate these safety messages in a fun and engaging way that still makes clear the seriousness of this dangerous activity.

“We chose to use humour that would appeal to the target audience and get them talking about and sharing it with their peers,” Mr Gay said.

Anderson said the video effectively highlighted the risks that a lot of people take behind the wheel.

“I really enjoyed working on this video, it was good to see that Transport for NSW was open to creative ways of reaching Gen Y,” he said.

“The song is really catchy, but whether you love the video or hate it, we just hope the message gets through: Get Your Hand Off It.”

Telstra, Optus, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone have all thrown their support behind the campaign, producing communications with their customers that reinforce that they should never use a handheld mobile phone while they drive.

New road rules in November last year make it clear that a phone can only be used if it is mounted in a cradle or is operated by Bluetooth or voice activation.

This campaign makes it abundantly clear that it is against the law to pick up and use a phone while driving. A driver may only hold a phone to pass it to a passenger.

The ‘Get Your Hand Off It’ campaign will feature outdoor advertisements, including on buses and taxis, to reach at the most effective time those motorists who take these risks.

Love the ol' datto. That's all.
Everyone who drives a car (and probably most that don't) know it's illegal to use a mobile whilst driving.
Do we have advertising telling us not to run around holding up banks, not to jump off the Sydney harbour bridge, not to use the wifes hairdryer under the shower etc?
NO!
Why?,,,,, because it is commonsense that tells us not to do these things, well most of us anyway. Main thing I see wrong with this ad is that it does not show the damage/injury that can be caused to 3rd parties, it only seems to focus on the ugly dudes life, but I 'spose it fits with the me, me ,me attitude of the world we live in these days!

Against the advice of others here, I did watch the entire clip.

This is highly offensive to the following:
Datsuns
Go jacks
Brick walls made from foam bricks
Sledge hammers
Outlaw motorcycle gang riders who wear red pants and jumpers with hot dogs and hamburgers on them.
Derek Anderson, whoever he is?
Cats

Now, on a serious note.
As a truck driver, I see a lot when it comes to people’s activities in cars. When it comes to the issue of texting while driving, in my opinion, the MAJOR culprits are in fact women, of all ages.

How dare I say that, I mean, that’s sexist. I could be called a misogynist as it’s the latest buzz word going around these days. So why is this campaign targeted at men?

I wonder what ACMA would say if the people were reversed in this clip?
Let’s see, some sheila with her hand between her legs and then having her do a provocative dance on the bonnet of a car?

The femmin-nazis would be up in arms, wouldn’t they?

Perhaps we need a mass protest to AMCA.

They could end all this phone usage while driving (not hands free, actually picking it up and talking, or worse, texting) by bringing in a new set of adverts to warn of upcoming strict penalties for the crime...

Show a guy talking on a phone having a near miss (much like, maybe, the guy in a green SS ute who nearly sideswiped me in Rockhampton today as he chatted on his phone), show the guy getting pulled over by the cops, then getting chatted about talking on his phone, then being told to hand it over. Show the cop take the sim card out of it, then hand the card to the guy.

Then show them put the fricking phone under his cars front wheel and order him to drive away...

Come on...no one's that bloody busy they can't either answer a call later or find a spot to pull over and call back...

I posted a few weeks back that kids are more distracting in cars than mobile phones !!!!
When powers that be, get a bee in their bonnet about something, they really go to town.
This will pass when they find something else to raise revenue.

I don't see a problem here? Why is everyone crying a waste of time?
This is a serious thing on the roads which is causing serious injury and death.
Sitting in traffic every morning I see at least one person swerving left and right while they are trying to text or check Facebook... I think we need some more awareness here

Without knowing where you’re from, as you are one of those “really cool mysterious people” who don’t put what state they’re in because they think the CIA will come and get them, perhaps they should use the other deterrent they have in NSW.

Show how big the fine is on a billboard.

For example:
Texting while driving, $1,000,000 on the spot fine and if you give us attitude, we’ll break your kneecaps as well.

It should work.

I could only watch just over a minute, didn't want to waste any more of my time.

The article in the OP confuses what the issue actually is, is it the problem of using the mobile phone when driving, or is it handling the mobile phone?

To me, talking on the phone (regardless of hands free or held), thinking about the business deals or whatever being discussed, how can they be also concentrating on their driving?

Silver Ghia I think you're right there. I can remember reading in the paper once some uni lecturer or professor or something was saying talking on the hands free was about as bad as holding your phone in your hand anyway because you're still not concentrating on where you're going. So maybe the ads should be: "Drive your car properly or get off the road you clown"?

This is the essence of the whole problem.

We are not all the same.

You cannot understand how this can be done but to others it is normal and not difficult at all.
This is no different to the speed limit debate, the P plate debate or anything else.

"I cannot do it so therefore no one else can" is not a valid axiom......

Yes, some can do both tasks well (discussing on the phone, and driving), especially females.

But some cannot, I see it very often when the car in front suddenly slows down and/or starts drifting to each side of their lane erratically, as the phone has rung and they are talking on their hands free phone. That's where the danger is.

Again this is the problem. Dumbing everything down so stupid and/or incapable people are not marginalised is destroying the whole human race.

For hundreds of thousands of years we have evolved to become the leading species on this planet because the smart and the strong bred and survived improving everything while the dumb and weak did not.

Now we have decided that we are all equal and that everyone should be allowed to do everything regardless of how incapable. If something is too hard for stupid people then it should be banned.

This is not natural, it is artificial.

It is very ironic that the central core of people who constantly scream about "climate change", "planetry vandalism" and "natural rather than artificial" are the same ones who advocate supressing human evolution and political correctness which are both extremely unnatural.

Maybe there should be a "mobile phone" endorsement on drivers licenses where the driver must pass a driving test while talking on a mobile phone.

Of course this comes back to the "If I can't do it, no one can" because I would feel inferior and me not feeling inferior is more important the anything else in the universe.........

Wow yes I'm an extremely cool mysterious person because I simply havnt clicked a few buttons in the option menu... Now although I would like go figure out exactly what is going on in your schizophrenic head I would like to get back to my point. I DO live in NSW (you can rest easy now champ) and I personally do not know what fines are in place for mobile use in a car and have never seen it advertised. The whole champaign seems like a good idea to me considering the amount of people on the roads who own smart phones and are addicted to social media sites
