Default iPhone applications. Where to get them?

Seeing as I have now joined the technological yuppie brigade and bought an iPhone, I'm curious as to where the best place to get some good applications for it would be, and what some good ones are? I've had a bit of a hunt around and seen one on the apple website that calculates receipts for expenses which would be very handy, but am open to suggestions of other ones worth getting - and where to get them from.

I bought the 3GS model and it will be here in 2wks.

What did you always call me for having an iPhone? iTunes is the only place to get apps on a non-jailbroken iPhone. I upgraded from my 3G to a 3GS (the 3G stuffed up on me) and I love the 3GS even more than the old 3G. As for good apps there are heaps out there but google has a good one, Westpac and the Commonwealth also have apps, ABC news/radio is good for the latest news, really whatever you want or need there is more than likely an app out there for you.

Dynolicious is a good one too I'm told, I'm just waiting to see if TomTom bring out a GPS app soon.

The 3GS is noticeably FASTER than the old phone. Just swapped.

Apps wise yeah there is a ton in the store. Dont see the need to jailbreak the thing really for apps reasons, I mean how cheap do you have to be to save the cost of the apps?

It amazes me how many websites have custom iphone frontends now.

Jailbreaking isn't necessarily to get cheap or free apps. It also provides functionality that isn't present in Apple's code.

For instance, up until 3.0 came out the iPhone didn't support MMS or tethering (both of which I had on my JB'ed 2.0 iPhone)

There are many other cool features you can use with a JB'ed iPhone and I'm contemplating JB'ing it again since my upgrade.

Exactly!.... For users on 3 who do not want to pay .50c/Mb for Data roaming there is word of a fix that automatically stops your phones internet access when you find yourself roaming. Of course the catch is you have to have your iphone JB'ed..
Unfortunately though once you JB your phone, you're not covered by Warranty...

Agreed, but he was asking specifically about apps.

For new users, I wouldnt get caught in the JB trap unless you're a techhead that just has to mess with stuff

Not iPhone related but phone application related, but instead of starting a new thread i thought i'd ask in here,

Are there any applications for the N96 that will display smililys properly in SMS's. I had an old GSM flip Nokia that displayed them

B2tf, don't whatever you do, jailbreak the phone. As was posted above, it's not necessary for the 3GS phone and you don't sound too tech-savvy(no offence intended, I'm not either-still trying to work out why people say "pwned" and roflmaololgtgbrbttyl etcetc.) it can go horribly wrong if you don't know what you're doing or can't fix it... Neither of which I can do now my phone is JB'd. At least I still have ff.com.au...

You are aware that you can restore your phone to factory after a Jailbreak?

I had a 2.0 JB phone, now I'm running a 3.0.1 factory phone - I can downgrade to 2.0 again then JB it again if I really wanted to (infact, currently considering it...).

With google at your fingertips and/or an account on whirlpool, if you couldn't follow simple step by step instructions in the progression of JB'ing your phone or it just stuffed up which is exceptionally rare - whatever state it is in is more than likely recoverable.

...but, I'm sure the OP will find more than enough apps on iTunes anyway.

I didn't jailbreak it, my mate did. I just don't like the way my phones so slow now, at least before I could open my messages and they actually opened!!! This damn phone has done everything wrong by me, I'm just waiting for it to steal my car..

My original iPhone 3G ran like a dog WITHOUT being JB'd after I updated to 3.0.

The new 3GS is much nicer in that respect.

As above, its likely if you subscribe to whirlpool and spend more than a passing moment on there you are likely the type of person that just has to do it. If not, leave it alone

Ok, so can someone tell me what exactly is 'jailbreaking' on an iPhone?

I am considering getting one of the new 3GS ones, probably 16GB , or a Blackberry.....

Well the phone has now arrived and I am trying to set it up now. Virgin have advised me to put the SIM card in (done) and connect the phone to the PC and itunes should come up. Itunes does come up, but what now? Nothing seems to be happening and I have no info with the phone about how to set it up.

Get rid of the iphone and get a Samsung Omnia... No need for software on your computer to run it, just plug it in and it acts like a hard drive.

Best phone I have ever bought! Ton's of free app's for it here:

www.dreamstrikes.com

Just go to the "App's for Windows PDA - PPC" section and download them!

There is also a section on that dreamstrikes website for iphone app's, but not sure if you need to JB your phone to use them...

Mate stick with it, these phones have the best user interface going, and are remarkably usefull for a myriad of business and pleasure purposes.

I switched from an i-mate jasjam windows mobile device, clunky peice of crap it was in comparison to the 3g iphone.

Once you have it running, and get used to it, you will start to appreciate the user freindly nature of it.

I agree to stick it out as well, once set up and maybe someone to show you how it all works, you will love.

I also agree with EDSprint, if your finding yourself not wanting an iPhone then the Samsung Omina (Non-Windows Mobile Device) or Sony Ericson's Xperia X1 (Windows Mobile Device).

Those who use thier mobiles for business use, may be better off with a Windows Mobile Device, upcoming Exchange 2010 for example, if your business wants to intergrate Voicemail. Communicator for those businesses out thier that use it. WM6.1 device does come with benifits and I have SPB Software installed, love my phone....including the TV! Xperia X1
