just thinking lately how we have had some great cars produced right here in Oz in the recent past as well as currently, cars I believe will be icons in the years to come. I was thinking imagine money wasnt an issue and things like space etc etc wasnt a problem some cars that I would buy and let sit so they can be seen in mint condition many years from now. Cars I thought of would include
BA XR6T BA XR8 BA GTP BF Cobra 302 BF Limited Edition GT BF Typhoon FG XR6T FG XR8 G6ET FG F6 FG GT Monaro CV8 Holden VY R8 6.0 VE SSV 6.0 VE R8 6.0 VE GTS 6.0 W427 we go on about how good it must have been back in the old days with the monaro's, GT's and chargers etc etc but some of us forget with cars like the above around its even better than it was and most probably (I hope not) will be the best for a long time (hopefully fuel etc etc dont kill these machines). So what would you guys buy and lock up? |

BA XR6T is my choice, but that is more for emotional reasons than anything
302 Cobra is already climbing, but I think its over rated W427 is probably going to be the most logical choice, many a Holden hardcore have attempted to recreate the GTHO situation, just take a look at how many VN Group A's are for sale at the moment with delivery k's on them

From the current model (FGs aren't they?) of Fords I'd have to say that maybe a Typhoon (last of the 4.0L straight sixes) would be "collectable". For the same reason (last of the BOSS modular V8s) I suppose a GT/GT-P. However I would not ever buy a car simply to "collect" it and hope it increased in value - I like driving them too much. |

None... i like to drive my cars, i couldn't care less what they're worth in 20 years time..
Also im not so sure how the plastics and electronics will fare with storage, the older cars are far simpler. Storing cars means tying up money that i cant enjoy or see benefit from now, id rather use it for better things i could enjoy now..

none of them will be good investments.
and even if some of them do go up in value (which i doubt) i am willing to bet that putting 50 odd grand into shares or an investment fund will do a lot better over the next 40 years than any of those cars Cars arent investments, Yes the GT HO has done amazing, as well as a couple of old Holdens, btu there is only a few cars that if you could wind back the clock would be worth it, and most of those had racing heritage etc……none of the current crop do and aside from 1 or 2 cars in that list, they are all mass produced in large numbers. Only rare cars go up in value |

If you had of bought an F250 with a power stroke diesel 4 years ago you could sell it now with 90,000klm on it still for a 10K profit over what you paid.

I can't think of a current car I could be bothered storing to be honest. I believe those days are long gone.

If I had a full license, a G6E-T or a GT-E.
Otherwise, a G6E.

The cost of petrol was irrevalent and if you got caught doing 100 MPH you had to be incredibly unlucky would more than likely get a lecture and told to slow down, you could spin the back wheels and not be branded a hoon, because the police did proper police work back then. Sure we have some fantastic cars but we always have. I had an XW GT with a 351 windsor and a 36 gallon petrol tank that cost about $20 to fill and would easily wind up to 140 MPH. The new cars of today may go faster, stop quicker, handle better, and have better economy but there is very little built that will become collectable and you can't drive them how they should be driven without risking confiscation and being branded a hoon.

I forgot to mention in the first post Im basing the list regardless of future value more so just to have and show off in many years to come. for instance something like the VC Brock isnt worth heaps and heaps but If you have a mint condition example these days it will stand out and be envied by many.

The XE ESP will be the next collectible IMO if not already.
Difficult to say about the current era GT's...Nobody in 1970 would have thought a new XW GTHO would be worth half a mill 38 years later when they cost less than 5 grand new back then

FG TYPHOON will be the closet modern ford in terms of collectability since the gt's of the 70's in years to come.
SUBARU 2 door STI.the first shape in the blue. MONARO CV8 in certain colour combinations.as well as hsv GTS 2 DOOR and one biggy should be the 6.0 litre HSV GTO 2 DOOR. and i guess the W427. Last edited by dave289; 16-05-2008 at 09:00 PM. |

I would think the computer/ electronics in any modern car would have a finite life (maybe thirty fourty years) No new cars are collectable, in thirty years will there still be petrol? How many battery cars will there be on the road and how much of a stigma will be attached to people that still run ancient combustion engines? Will the Goverment simply tax petrol burning cars higher and higher to make them costly to run and own? My thoughts are try and find desirable electric cars maybe the first one that can do 160 kilometers an hour or the first one with four wheel drive. Or number one off the production line, the first model to win a race in motorsport, the advances over the next thirty years in battery powered cars will be phenominal, but everyone will look back at what they evolved from. History repeats

None of the above. Todays cars have none of the character or individuality that cars 20+ years ago had.
In fact most look like they were designed by Pixar !
