Cool What do you do when you're tailgated?

I'd just like to know :
What do you do when you're tailgated?
What do you do when you see another driver talking on the phone or reading (newspaper on the steering wheel)?

Get out of their way and let them go past..
Its safer and much less hassle to swallow your pride and move over than argue over a rear ender even though you're in the right.

Cool

I usually let them go if there is additional lane for me to move but sometimes I'm being tailgated on a narrow road and even tough I'm already going ~5km over the limit. In those cases (making sure it's safe) I start slowing down- they really get mad when I get down to ~20km under the limit (only for few seconds) and then speed up to my previous speed- this usually make them drive bit further behind me.

Exactly right.. Im not that scared of anyone but whats the point in getting involved? Move over and let them go rather than trying to be a copper and thinking you are going to educate the whole entire world. I feel very sorry for that old guy who got bashed to hospital recently but the sad fact is he bought himself into the line of fire by thinking he would tell the other driver everything he was doing wrong when the driver was quite obviously hostile anyway. You could be involved in something every 5 minutes if you wanted to be, but whats the point? You never win, It will end up in a fight (atleast!!) and then you are either dead, in Hospital or on assult charges if you win regardless of who started it and the only ones who win are the Police by walking in and charging you.

On the flip side of the coin theres been some instances where Ive come up behind people who intentionaly drive way under the speed limit or in the right lane blocking miles of traffic just to think they are smart and its stuff the whole world up day. So on this one I think it also shows that you should move over and not inconvenience anyone and think to yourself have I done anything stupid myself!

Tailgated: gradually slow down, slow enough for them to not realise I am actually slowing down... eventually when I've gone from 100km/hr to 60km/hr they kind of get the idea... and rush off overtaking me at full throttle. Waste your fuel and work yourselves up guys, I'm in no rush

On Phone: Don't really care as long as they seem to be concentrating on the road at the same time. If they are moving around inside their lane or driving without due care, I'll give them a blast of the horn and a flash of the hi-beams

Book/Newspaper: Nothing... Darwin Theory will work it's magic eventually :/

same pretty much ... just slow down .. it's the best thing to do, that way if you ARE re-ended it's not so bad ...

as for reading ... yeah i give them the horn if they're all over the road, but instead of flashing my highbeams i give the LED's abit of a flash ... scares the SH!T out of them!

Its just not worth worrying about. The last thing you want is to pull up at the lights and have some clown now on foot racing over to your door all hyped up over nothing. Oh and Im not small lad, and Ive had that happen before, when I get out they back off and its nothing but mouth. Its still not worth the hassle.

The trick really is to move over, be aware of them til they pass and not give them another thought after that.

I get out of the way pull over especially for truck drivers who are probably on amphetamines.

When I see someone talking on the phone gong slow and wandering over the road I wish I was a cop .

Reading a news paper I look at them as if they have 2 heads tell them what I think of them

start slowing by 10 k's, then back to limit, then down by 15k's, back to limit, down by 20 k's, over a couple of k's it drives em nuts, usually they'll sit back until they can overtake.

just ignore them. i tend to concentrate on looking through the big bit of glass in front of me whilst still checking the mirrors to be aware of my surroundings.

if someone wants to sit up my tail, good luck to them.

why slow down???? its only going to aggravate the situation. people that get rattled by other driver's behaviour are just as bad.

here's another question! how many people sit out in the right hand lane in 80+ zones but are not overtaking? how many people whilst sitting out in the right hand lane get annoyed with people up their tail? which is worse, the person tailgating or the person in the right hand lane. both are illegal.

keep left unless overtaking (which is mandatory in 80+ zones) is a forgotten law it seems and is far more annoying/frustrating to me than someone tailgating!!

Depends on what mood im in...
From putting my foot flat and watching them disappear in the distance
Turning my lights on and them thinking im braking
And if they are really persistant and very annoying, Ill flick an unlit ciggie out the window

I had a commodore wagon with their lights on (during the day of course) tailgating me about an inch behind me through a 60km/h zone where there's a permanent speed camera : (if anyone knows the area - it's on the way from byron to ballina - before you get to that big hill).

Well, I made sure I did about 58km/h through the 60km/h area, and just as it hits 100km/h at the start of a massive and very steep hill (and also splits back out in to two lanes) - i put my foot down as he went out to overtake and left him for dust. Of course, I sat at about 100-102km/h the whole way up the hill, and by the time he eventually caught up when we started going down the other side, it had gone back to one lane and he was back behind me. But I think he got the hint and he stayed off my tail. I was doing the speed limit and staying in the left lane - not my fault his car struggles up hills ;)

To answer your question - I don't usually do anything but ignore them - they can go around me. But the above happened to me today on my way down to Ballina and I thought it was amusing

man some of u ppl are the reason there are accidents, yeah tailgaters suck but just let them go (if able to).

if im in the left lane and someone is tailgating me and its a 2 lane road i dont do anything, its their job to go around me.

if i see someone on the phone i sorta snort @ them, but someone reading the paper i really hate

I used to get all worked up myself and tap the brakes etc, give them the bird but the next day some other clown would do it so i gave up. I drive a Land Rover Discovery most of the time, the missus drives the falcon, so i go by the motto "My tow bar is stronger than your radiator". If they hit me, the wreck their car, not mine. :

I was heading into lithgow a while back and as i do kept looking in the mirror to make sure no one is to close incase i need to hit the brakes for something. Nothing is there, i round a slight corner in the road and look in my side mirror and there is a P-plater in a ute so close i can not see him in the rear view mirror, his ute was hidden nicely behind the spare tyre, and this was on duel carriage way so its not like he couldnt overtake.

I have done a number of things over the years , some things i should not have done , these days I tend to move over or stick to the speed I was doing.
As for phones or papers , bloody annoys me if I can see it is affecting their driving.
My pet hate is kids with no seatbelts on ,I have seen this in QLD a bit lately ,bloody ridiculous .

Here Here!! I can't stand people who throw there butts out of the window! I am a smoker and I always put my butts in a bin! It is a MAJOR TURNOFF! Stop littering my planet! As for kids without seatbelts, I don't start the car unless my passengers have their belts done up. My car was hit in the rear end by a 19yr old girl who was talking on her mobile and was too close at the time. My brand new car! Her car was totalled and luckily for me, my car has a towbar so the damage was minimal but the police said if I wasn't wearing my seatbelt I would have been implanted in the windscreen! Think people...think!

The laws of physics would have protected you there. The only thing that makes you hit a windscreen is if your car comes to a sudden stop and your body wants to keep going.

I normally move over for them if they are in that much of a rush as my pride is easier fixed than the car.
