Not surprised it a bloody war zone here at the moment, was out on road and it was a nightmare, dodgy trees and fallen power lines and flooded creeks. Weather is absolutely psycho and with all those ships off the coast with their machieny shut down its easy for them to drag moorings and get knocked on to the beach.

Looks very similiar to the Sygna that go knocked up onto the beach at stockton, though i reckon they should be able to get this on off a bit easier

According to the News link, seas are around 5M on a 2M swell, 100kmh winds as well - it would not be very nice out there. Back in my Navy days and based on ships from Sydney I can remember the weather up the east coast - some days it was not fun at all.

The buoy few K's off the coast was recording 17 metres apparently. Journalists obviously got hold of this and tried reporting it as on the beach!!, clowns.

Definately weird driving around seeing all the cars and carnage. For anyone that knows the area, the Coles at The Junction has a car park underneath and the cars that where left in there where either floating or you could see the top 1-2 foot of.

Mate I work with had a bit over a foot flowing through his place, and he had to abandon his car in waist deep water and wade home.

Gosh this is a sad state of affairs for the folk at Newcastle. My wife and I visit Newcastle ( she has family in Taree & Forster) regularly looking for a home to move to from Adelaide. I'm now thinking the Gold Coast may be a better option! At least your not on water restrictions!

At least two more ships are at risk of running aground off Newcastle, after a bulk carrier beached in surf, forcing the evacuation of crew members by helicopter.

A rescue operation is in full swing with three helicopters airlifting the crew off the stricken, fuel-laden vessel, the Pasha Bulker, which is just 20 metres off the sand.

"There are now several ships reporting difficulties," said a spokeswoman for the Federal Maritime Minister, De-Anne Kelly.

"The Coral Emerald is about 2.8 nautical miles offshore and is now reporting its anchor is dragging due to the swell.

"Another ship, the Sea Confidence, is a lot closer to the beach. It's dropped its anchor but is having trouble holding.

"It's less than a nautical mile off Stockton Beach."

Enjoy...

Reminds me of a ship called the Cherry Venture , being blown onto rainbow beach, just north of Noosa Heads , during a cyclone when I was a Kid ! 1974 I think ! It has been slowly getting stripped over the years and rusting away ! It was classed as an unsafe structure about 7 or 8 years back and the Govt had to send a demo crew and cut it up ! They had many ships and tug boats trying to pull it off the beach ! They never succeeded !

THERE are fears two large ships may become beached due to "wild" conditions north of where a cargo ship ran aground off the New South Wales coast this morning.

"It's got its engines at full speed trying to get away from the coastline but it's being dragged towards the coastline and will run aground, we expect soon," he said.

Haven't seen it like that for a longtime.

At Tafe or building had to be evacuated, because the halls were starting to flood.

Maybe all the greenies who are protesting the coal loading and forcing these ships to stay moored off the coast will shut up now and let them get on with business!

Hey, that's an easy way to get a better break happening at Nobbys.

That's just totally weird. When I first saw this I thought it must have run aground on Stockton Bight like the Signa and many others before it.

I hope they dont' do the same as they did with the Signa and break it in two when they try and drag it off. I went and saw that when it happened as a kid many years ago and would often see it afterwards driving buggies and riding the trike.

Just saw an update on Sky News:
3 more are in trouble. One of those is off Swansea. two of those have had Tugs sent to them. There is some concern about the ship that ran aground breaking up. It has a lot of fuel on board. They say the flat bottom of the ship makes it less likely to break up. They can't do anything much until the weather abates.

Let's hope it stays in one piece or, if it breaks up, they get the fuel off it first.

In other news related to this storm - two cars washed off bridges in the Hunter Valley. I think 4 are dead or missing.

The biggest issue will be leaking fuel oil. This could be a disaster. This is the kind of thing that makes you (me anyway) rethink Australia's charge towards nuclear power. Disasters CAN happen. At least it sound like the crew are OK and that is a good thing.
