Angry Victoria's New Number plate message

Quote:

Victoria has been on the move, the place to be and the garden state. Now its number plates will be focused on a road safety campaign.

Premier Ted Baillieu today said the government wanted to expand its regional campaign to "talk the toll down" across the state.

"Victoria's new number plate slogan will be a road safety message front and centre for every Victorian," Mr Baillieu told the Liberal Party State Council in Bendigo today.

"From tomorrow Victorians will be able to join the debate on the plate for our state."

The state's number plate slogans have been "Victoria - The Place To Be", "Victoria - On The Move" and "Victoria - Garden State".

Mr Baillieu said those plates had had their role and would be phased out.

The premier had flagged the idea of a new catchphrase for the state after winning last November's election, but now wants the slogan on licence plates to reflect the road safety message.

"There's no doubt that to put a road safety message across the bottom of a plate will reinforce our conviction about the importance of road safety," he said.

Road safety messages already in the public arena, such as "Don't Drink And Drive", may be on the cards but Mr Baillieu said this was an opportunity for Victorians to have their say on the appropriate slogan.

Mr Baillieu, who admitted he would have been caught speeding once or twice "a long time ago", said he did not have a set target for reducing the road toll, although that might be canvassed in a road safety action plan.

"Any death is one death too many - we'd like to see the road toll lower and continue to go lower," he said.

Victoria's road toll currently stands at 218 compared with 230 at the same time last year.

The new number plates are expected to be rolled out next year.

Oh my god! Has this state gone crazy on road safety?
This is the worst slogan i've ever heard.
Can't these politicians think about anything else apart from road safety.
I'm just glad i don't have a Victorian annoying number plate anymore.
I so feel like changing states after reading this, another nanny state rule. Grow up Victoria

I agree as it is just rediculous , how the hell is that really meant to do anything anyway. Putting that on a plate aint gonna improve saftey period as its the person behind the wheel whom decides on whether they gonna drive safely not the plate on a car.
I use to work for ses an some of the crashes lve seen werent due to drive at times but the roads. The goverment should focus on repairing some of these roads around vic that are a mess still from the floods here an there.
I agree grow up vic goverment

Peter Beattie tried this with "QLD the smart state" in addition to the existing "Sunshine State".

It actually worked out quite well as if you saw a car with "smart state" plates you knew it was a government vehicles as they were forced to use it and no one else wanted it.

But as they are hell bent on pushing the speed cameras save lives dogma how about:

Victoria The Slow State

They could run a whole campaign:

Victoria, the place where slow people drive.
Victoria, you have to be slow to live here.

Thousands of possibilities......

The only cars you see here with "The Smart State" are government cars like cop cars, etc, and the government fleet cars we get out here like the Prados they supply us with. Members of the public, by a staggeringly vast majority, tick the box on the rego paper that says "Sunshine state". I believe it's a directive that all government vehicles have "Smart State" plates on them.
Rego papers still ask which plate you want, "Sunshine" or "Smart" state.

"Smart State" just sounds like someone smug and up themselves...bugger having that on my car.

I like the new south wales one.
Most of them are either "NEW SOUTH WALES"
or
"NSW"

Too good we don't even need a slogan to tell people how great NSW is.. lol

ACT has had safety slogans such as "Don't drink and drive" on our rego labels for years now. But not on the number plates.

Victoria seems to have gone mad alright. Does their focus on speeding really achieve anything (in terms of road safety)?
