Exclamation BREAKING NEWS AFL star Ben Cousins arrested

AFL star Ben Cousins arrestedArticle from: Font size: Decrease Increase Email article: Email Print article: Print Submit comment: Submit comment October 16, 2007 04:02pm

BREAKING NEWS: Troubled West Coast Eagles star Ben Cousins has been arrested after police searched his car in Perth today, witnesses said.

Nine Network reporter Grant Taylor told Southern Cross radio he saw Cousins being handcuffed and put in a police car in Aberdeen Street at East Perth.

He said a second West Coast player was also being interviewed.

Cousins was shirtless and grinning as he was led away, Taylor said. ABC Radio said the footballer was being interviewed at East Perth police station.

The AFL club said earlier they knew nothing of the incident.

"I'm not sure if he's even in the country, he's on leave," the spokesman said.

Taylor said police conducted a thorough search of Cousins and his vehicle on the roadside. He said a young woman was also in the car.

"Just a short while ago police have taken Ben Cousins away, handcuffed, shirtless, into custody, taken him away for questioning after stopping him and a young woman in his car on Aberdeen St," Taylor told Southern Cross at 1530 AEST.

"We also understand that police are also questioning another man, there's a rumour that that other man could be a current member of the West Coast Eagles."

Cousins has never tested positive to illicit drugs but flew to the United States for rehabilitation earlier this year and apologised for his conduct.

He returned to play for the club on a number of conditions, believed to include a zero tolerance clause to testing positive to banned substances, staying away from underworld figures and not falling foul of the law.

Cousins, a former skipper of the club, was with Eagles legend Chris Mainwaring hours before he died earlier this month.

Further comment is being sought from WA Police and the West Coast Eagles.

For the police to have arrested him, there is obviously evidence of an offence and I would harbor a guess, that when a vehicle has been searched, illicit substances may be involved. IF this is the truth and he is found guilty I think the AFL should get tough and sack him.

How many more Ben Cousins are there in the AFL? I suspect he is not the only drug user.

I saw him get arrested. It happened outside of my work. The cops pulled his car apart searching it and they eventuly handcuffed him and took him and the girl that was also in the car away.

Well to be truthful I didnt actualy see them take him way, I had gone back to work before they took him away and my work mate told me they had handcuffed him. I walked past when then cops were going over his car and they were being very thourgh. I dont know where Daniel Chick got arrested but he was not with Ben Cousins at the time he got done.

If he gets found guilty he has to be dropped from the AFL!! First the reported association with underworld, then the Booze Bus, Then Substance abuse now this...Thats a decent 3 Strikes!!

Chances are if he has been arrested, he will be kicked out of the eagles anyway........

Lets hope the Eagles grow some balls and kick him out, like they have last time.

Im sure it has nothing to do with his private lifestyle and nothing to do with a few people he knows, particularly Mr John Kizon.

interesting! unfortunately for ben he has mates with less than perfect records and practices. the afl and everyone else feel that he shouldn't hang out with these types of people as he is in the public spotlight and a role model for young and not so young. its obvious that he is struggling to stay away from this sort of thing as witnessed today.

will the afl ban him? who knows! will west coast sack him? time will tell but this is quite probable. will other clubs chase him if he is on the market? you bet your life they will. he is undeniably a superstar on the field. poor record or not there are a few teams (richmond, essendon, carlton, melbourne etc) that would love to have him in the squad.

on a bit of a tangent but still to do with drugs. other recent events have shown that just because you test negative doesn't mean you don't cheat!! look at marion jones! all medal winners at any major sporting event get tested and yet she took home 5 golds. she has now come clean and said she was on drugs at the time. obviously her doctor was a lot better than floyd landis' doctor as he just surrendered his yellow jersey from tour de france.

recreational drugs and performance enhancing drugs are becoming more and more prevalent in todays society so it is more and more likely that well known names are going to get caught using or being associated with those who do from time to time. they chose their career path so they must suffer the consequences.

i've never done drugs and never will. i wonder how many others can say the same, esp the ones jumping on ben cousins. i don't condone what he may have done but he's no pioneer thats for sure. could be made an example by the afl though!

To be honest you may be suprised, I dont think any club wants a convicted (if thats what ends up happening) drug dealer or taker at their club hanging out with their other teammates off the field with the risks and public negativitey it will cause. He could go to any of those clubs you mention and none of them will get even close to winning a flag in the rest of his playing years except maybe Carlton and I suspect Judd may have come home for more than the 2 obvious reasons.

what a wasted talent.
however he is not alone. drug use is rife amongst elite athletes. its not if they will get caught, but more like when.
eagles & afl should ban him like they did to shane warne & wendell sailor

Didn't know those two played for the Eagles?? LOL

These two weren't banned just suspended. Same as Justin Charles, the only AFL player to test positive to Steroids that we know of. It will be an interesting couple of days to hear just what the fallout of this would be??

I'm just wondering if it might have been a stash that he'd forgotten about?? I doubt it, but it is still possible, and would be ironic if it was and ended his career!!

I doubt we'll see him back at the Eagles, let alone playing in the AFL at all.
A great player is wasted LOL!
