heh heh..........

185kw engine - spacer before the throttle body, 200's dont have it
200kw engines are hand built and assuming rocker covers are the standard ones will have a plaque on the driver's side RC saying who built it - 185's dont

If it is an April 01 built or later it will have the 200kw engine

There are other ways to tell but this is all I can be bothered writing :

All AU V8's, except for the 220 kw engines, and the 250 kw engines have that blank plate before the throttlebody mate, as they all have the 65mm throttlebody.

The rest of the info is correct though, best way is to check the build plate and see what date it is.

Here you go mate, have a good look at where the TB is, you will just see it.
As you can see, this was taken when it was fairly new and completely stock.

You can still see the yellow sticker which showed what motor it was (200 manual) lol

I have a Nov 01 built AU11 XR8 with series 111 options (original owner) with a 70mm throttle body (not measured at the bellmouth) "and with NO tickford wings engraved" with HECTOR M signature rocker cover.... So I rang 13FORD 15/05/2009 and was told I have a 6 litre (yes 6 litre) 185 KW engine..... So basically its just getting even better for me... Nothing is adding up here !!!

Its an June 00 so not sure...I will check for the spacer although it looks the same as pictured above.

not sure if that means yes or no..

no signed rocker cover.

We are thinking 185kw then? That's a little dissapointing but I guess that's what you get for not doing your homework.

Although this one seems to go better than my 200kw XR8 from memory so who knows.

Is there any real difference between the 2 engines anyway?

Well my dad had an AU1 XR8 ute and still has the AU2 200kw XR8 ute (2003), they were both completely stock, but the series 1 had bit better throttle response while the 200 was a bit more laggy but when the 200 got going it had slightly more power.. much more top end..

The 200kw engine had a much deeper engine note then the 185 as well!

With that build date, it's a 185. You can confirm for sure, yourself, by reading up at www.fpv.com.au, then click on the heritage links and select AU XR8 - it has whole blog about what engine is in what (Click here).

Here's the bit relevant to you:
"The AU XR8 ute's huge reserves in grip, safety and strength could more than support a power increase but this had to wait until after the April 2000 arrival of the AU Series II. The Series II upgrade introduced new front suspension components to allow for larger twin piston front calipers and a major boost in pad size and rotor thickness. Changes to the master cylinder and booster delivered a much firmer brake pedal especially in XR models. The new dual thickness/laminated firewall added refinement and while the XR8 sedan engine went to 200 kW, the XR8 ute retained the 185 kW engine."

Only real difference between the 200s and the 185s is the tune pretty much (slightly different cam etc), but you can get the 185s boogying by getting an edit, exhaust etc, and most importantly, 1.72 ST2027 RRs. The 200s kept the 65mm TB - as phil says, only the 220s got the all in one 70mm TB, but the TB makes bugger all difference anyway.

I had an AU2 forte rated at 175kw from factory, and with extractors, single 3" exhaust and RRs, got power up to 147rwkw, which for an auto is in between the 200 and 220 spec engines. (Mine had 119rwkw standard). With an edit, I would've got up around 160rwkw easily, which is standard 220 manual range, unedited, and roughly what an edited auto would get!

Funny my old one had the 200kw so it must have been series III, too long ago to remember.

Oh well this one has got dual 3" exhaust and extractors so it's probably closer to 200 than 185 now..just missing the fancy build plate.

Going on from a technicallity, What were the differences between the EL II 185 and the AU I 185?

I though it had something to do with the headers on the EL were better and the AU had RR's?

Cheers

The EL has the E7 heads while the AU gets the GT40P's.
The 185 engines had the standard stamped steel rockers, not rollers.

Yep, but some were cast iron, and some were alloy, and then back to cast iron again.

They all would be cast iron on the 185's and the 200kw engines mate, only the 220 got the alloys early on and then went to iron late S2 models(T series) all xr8 had iron heads, gt40p's.

Yes, I should have read the question right the first time!

l've read whats on here now and gone down to the shed to check it out and report back . build date is 4/01 , it has GT40Ps with roller rockers , engine builder is AJ Lindara , so l now presume that it is a 200 kw engine , the intake looks the same as philstoj picture and it has the spacer also , did these things have headers like the normal V8s or a factory set of pipes , on the drivers side first 3 pipes go around the steering shaft (outside) and the last one drops down inside the shaft , from pictures of the XR8s that l;ve seen so far l would say that mine is only a XR8 not a Pursuit as there is no extras (winglets) on the front nose clip and no side skirts and the small peice on the rear quarter panel missing also , as l've mentioned before the engine is peices (long engine still together) intake , rockers , tappet covers , wiring and all the accessories are remove as they had being looking for a problem (6 months ago) now we have had a wet season and being left open the engine is now seized .

Also it has a badge/sticker on the rear quarter panel , infront of the wheel arch which says " 220 SVO " , does any know or seen this before

Yep, it's a 200kw based engine (the name plate gives that part away).

As for the 220 SVO - sounds like it went through SVO in Melbourne - contact Mick Webb and he may still have the details of what was done (my guess is just the badge, but I'm a cynic).

The manifold looks similar the the early standard windsor ones (shape wise) so what type is it , my ELGT has a tublar looking one on it (cobra l belive) and the T3 has the totally different one on it (specially made for the stroker) so what is this one called and why didnt they have the ELGT one which was a 200 kw engine also ?

I don't think there was an engine code change for the different 185/200/220 configurations, so chances are anyone ringing ford will get the same 185kw response.

If yours is 11/01, and it's a ute, then it's a 200kw motor. If it's a sedan, then it will be a 220.
