Default Diff noise's

Hey guys,

Went and seen the diff guy again today, i told him about the noise when mostly turning left and sometimes straight. Its like a mmmmm, mmmmm, mmmm (every half rotation) He said its mostly likely to be the LSD Slip Gripping or something like that and he stated sometimes it takes a little longer for the LSD to wear in so he said go do some figure 8's in a big car park and see how i go?

Sound like that's right or lot of ****?

Also i think when they put it all back together (just got diff replaced for those who don't know) there is quiet a loud metal on metal tap sound when going over bumps in the rear, Could something have not been tightened properly after re-assembly? and if so ill try tighten it but need some ideas

Anyway Thanks Guys

Ahhh yeah when you get a fresh LSD you have to let the oil seep in to every crack, mine was the same, figure 8s will do the trick, go easy on your driving for a while too. Did you end up changing the gears?

What? That means you have a longer ratio. Did you go from 3.45 to 3.08 or something?

If he went to a shorter ratio eg 3.08 to 3.45 his speedo will read higher at a lower speed which is the opposite of what's happened here

Well they wouldn't have swapped the gears over, you'd just hve the factory 3.45 out of the LSD. I'm surprised you haven't felt a difference yet if only slight

I'm fairly sure the speedo difference will tell you although you could just call and ask if he used the gears already in the LSD. They're not going to open up and ace dip 2 centres for nothing. You won't even notice the fuel Econ difference you're on gas anyway Lol. 3.45 will just rev a bit faster so you'll get a bit more acceleration out of it. The LSD was recoed yes?

if it was me i would actually do the figure eights .......then see how it goes, some work shop manuals also mention this practise, it may fix the problem, if it does`nt then do look for other alternatives.

HEy all,

UPDATE!! car is at mechanics, found out that they used my old cramble and pinion, old reconditioned LSD with second hand same ratio gears, aswell as the re-race and the labour costed me $1250 total.

The diff now has a whine at 80 to 100kmph and they said that its because its second hand and not to worry about it (WTF!) and the back of the car feels as if its going to fall of the car...

Have i been totally ripped here? or what?

and then he also added that they can change the gears to 3.9's for an extra $1250...

:( anyone else been through the same thing and should i be worried about the back of the car? (diff and surroundings)

Thanks

It cost me $1460 to go from 3:45 to 3:9's with brand new parts... I'd be as cranky as hell...

Did they use your crown wheel and pinion, or the crownwheel from another diff with your pinion?

Establish what your rights are with the Dept of Fair Trading, and go from there.

OK, so the way I read this is;
you took your car and a second hand LSD diff to them,
they rebuilt the second hand LSD,
they then removed your non-LSD diff centre, crownwheel & pinion, and
fitted the reco LSD diff centre crownwheel & pinion into your diff housing.

Correct?

If so, as you have supplied the second hand parts you have very little recourse unless you can prove negligence on their part when reconditioning and/or fitting.

Speedo variance where speedo is now reading lower than actual speed - sounds like you have gone from a 3.23/3.27 to 3.08 taller diff -
Std fit transducer gear for 3.08 was 20 tooth brown,
3.23/3.27 was 21 tooth light green,and
3.45 with 15" 22 tooth grey, with 16" or 17" 23 tooth black.
Depending on what tranducer gear you have fitted as to what gear you would need to correct the speedo - but keep in mind if auto it will shift your change points lower in the rev range as the AUs shift strategy is based on speed not revs..........

Cheers

James
