You shove a length of rope through the sparkplug hole to stop the valves from falling into the cylinder once you take the collets and springs out. Another method is filling the cylinder with compressed air by using a fitting that is screwed into the sparkplug hole. I use the compressed air method and take the springs off and put them on one at a time and turn whatever cylinder I am working on to TDC so if a valve falls it can only fall a few cm.
