It's much like the Isuzu Dmax's at work, you have to plant your foot a second before you strategically enter a roundabout. I preload the accelerator while holding the brake to get a better launch.

You should try a 2.2 Ranger, truly terrible for throttle and turbo lag. I've gotten used to it and can drive around the lag, but how Ford signed off on that is beyond me.
