The reality is that those who work in any form of health care will need to be vaccinated and we have already seen a number of employer groups introduce mandatory vaccinations and most people of working age are getting the more effective Pfizer vaccine. Yes, a percentage of those will still get infected, the so-called breakthrough infections, but if those they come into contact with are also vaccinated then the impact is reduced.

What we do know from current research in the US and UK is that the breakthrough infection rate is about 0.71% so that's 710 per 100k of vaccinated people - way below the current Delta variant infection rate.

Of those, about 0.02% require hospitalisation or 20 per 100k and the death rate for breakthrough infections is 0.005% or 1 for every 200k vaccinated people and that's based on worst case scenarios.

We could just take the uncharitable approach and say that eventually, the unvaccinated will get infected and between 0.5-1.0% of them will die based on the current rates in countries where vaccination rates have reached 80% of those eligible. Assuming we reach the 80% threshold here that leaves about 1.12M over 12's unvaccinated which means between 5-10k will die.

How's that for freedom of choice?
